Hi, my name is Lisa. I have lived in Laguna Niguel since 1998 where I have been tutoring students in grades K-8. I have over 20 years experience as a resource teacher and private tutor. I got my BA in Elementary and special Education at Michigan State University and I have a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. I have passed the CBEST and CSET exams. I decided early on that I prefer working with students 1:1 or in small group instruction rather than in a classroom setting. I relate extremely well with children and teens. I have a son and daughter in their early 20s, and I absolutely love being a mom. Because I create such a comfortable learning environment, students are relaxed and make great gains in their academic skills. Hi, my name is Lisa. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I love teaching Algebra I. I have been tutoring students in Algebra I for over 4 years. This summer I tutored a student for 24 hours who wanted to learn Algebra I over the summer so he could test into Algebra II in 8th grade. He accomplished his goal, and I will be providing tutoring support to him this year in Algebra II.
I was Director of Education at The Reading Game and Britannica Learning Center for 3 years and a tutor for 10. I tutored students in K-8 in reading and math. For 13 years, I was a resource teacher at a prominent private school in Laguna Niguel. In this position, I had the opportunity to work with students K-8 in reading, math, spelling, writing, social studies, vocabulary, grammar, science, study skills, test prep and penmanship. For three years at the private school, I spent many hours in 1st-5th grade classrooms. Having worked in so many grade levels has given me an excellent grasp of what academic skills students are required to learn at each grade level. I also have a comprehensive knowledge of appropriate curricula for each grade.
I was an instructor and Director of Education at The Reading Game, where, on a daily basis, I taught students how to apply the knowledge of phonics rules when they came upon unfamiliar words in their reading. In addition, I administered reading diagnostic tests to assess students' strengths and weaknesses in word attack skills, vocabulary, oral reading and reading comprehension. In my position as a resource teacher, I also had the opportunity to teach phonics skills, vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies. I believe having strong phonemic awareness and knowledge of the phonics rules is critical for reading success. Lastly, another very important component of teaching students to become better readers is taking the time to enjoy interesting, fun and heartwarming stories together.
As a resource teacher at a prominent private school in Laguna Niguel for over 10 years, I had extensive experience working with students in grades k-6 in all subject areas. As a result, my subject knowledge and teaching strategies are comprehensive. This allows me to guide students in completing short and long term projects as well as preparing for chapter quizzes and tests. I have recently passed the CSET (California Multiple Subject Exam for Teachers) required for a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. My credential is on file with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
