About Robert

Robert has nearly twenty years of experience as a teacher and a tutor. His instructional approach is firmly rooted in the epistemological perspective that each of us, through our own unique and varied experiences, constructs a mental model of the way the world works.

As such, it is really only by accessing those models of scientific and mathematical understanding that are held by students, through a focused and adaptive method of questioning, that the gaps and misconceptions that impede student learning can ultimately be identified and resolved.

He holds an A.S. in Physics, a double B.S. in Kinesiology and Mathematics, and an M.A. in Mathematics with emphasis in mathematics education.

As his ongoing commitment to the betterment of the learning environment, he holds professorship at two colleges.

All tutoring takes place in a public space in Laguna Hills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have taught math at various community colleges throughout the southern California area. Whereas most professors teach students to memorize formulas, I work on explaining algebra problems so that they can be understood intuitively.

Chemistry

Although my degree is in mathematics and mathematics education, I completed enough chemistry courses to qualify for a chemistry major. I have experience in regular chemistry, organic chemistry, as well as molecular chemistry.

GRE

The math content covered on the GRE is quite similar to what I cover in my college math classes.

Before you can succeed on this exam, you need to have a fundamental understanding of the topics that you may encounter. I work on helping my students build a solid foundation so that they can excel on the real exam.

Precalculus

Precalculus: The backbone of Calculus.

Through my years of teaching, I've seen the curriculum continue to develop and expand. Whereas just 10 years ago, it was a fairly straightforward math exam, it has become increasingly more nuanced.

There are challenging trig equations, polar coordinates, sequences and series, that have caused many students a lot of confusion.

Fortunately, I'm up-to-date on all these topics and would love to help out. I love working with students on Honors Pre-calculus specifically because the problems become that much more intriguing.

Super helpful

Robert was definitely on top of everything. He knew how to answer every single question I had. His office is nice and organized, and he even has a study space for me to work in. To help me prepare for my final, he offered a secondary practice exam. I've never had a teacher or tutor do that before. I think that the practice exam was almost more helpful than anything my teacher gave me to do.
