In this era of emphasis on all things STEM, especially for girls, I'm here for all the language and English related things that you need inside of and outside of the STEM world. Not to downplay the importance of STEM in any way...I lived and taught in Japan for 26 years and I know that kids in the US, especially in the elementary, middle- and high school arenas, need all the help they can get to keep up with kids in Japan's schools (which are now at #5 worldwide according to some studies) and in schools all over Asia (of which Singapore, S. Korea and Taiwan top the list). These are the kids you (or your children) are going to be up against when looking for jobs in just a few years.
But before STEM, even, there is English, reading, writing...and ESL for those whose first language is not English. This is where I can help. I've taught ESL to all ages, taught Japanese as a Second Language to American students in Japan, English Language Arts to grades 8 and 9 in an international school, and Academic English at Temple University's Tokyo campus to students wanting to get into a US university or college. In addition, I have done translation work in not only Japanese but French, so although I've never actually taught French I feel I am well-versed enough in it to help any struggling student.
I am passionate about communication, be it written or spoken, as it is THE key that unlocks every other door you or your child will have to open. There's just no other way about it. As far as I'm concerned, though, it's what is the most enjoyable and most challenging facet of our lives.
And I know kids. I raised two of them who are now in their 20s, and, thank God, gainfully employed. I volunteer at the Teen Center at the Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach, where I've lived now for three years. I'm ready and eager to get back in the teaching saddle.

The first time I met Nancy, I needed to pass a English speaking test urgently. I have failed that test for four times. And if I had failed it again, I would have not been able to work as a Teaching Assistant and to financially support my PhD program.
Nancy is the perfect tutor to me. Since I only had four days left before the test, I was not confident at all that I could pass the test. But Nancy arranged three meetings in four days with me, even during weekend. She revised all the errors in my articles and recorded them during and after meetings, so I could use the shadow technique to correct my pronunciation. She put more time into it than I paid for.
She is a very nice and patient person. And she has a lot of experience in teaching Asian students. She knows why Asian student speak and write English, because she can speak Japanese and Chinese! So She can efficiently help us avoid grammar and pronunciation errors.
I have gained confidence during meetings and I finally passed the test! I am really grateful to Nancy and strongly recommend her.
Thank you Ke for your recommendation! I was very happy to help you out. I am a big believer in the "shadow method" for practicing and improving English pronunciation and intonation. I am so glad you passed! You worked very hard for it!
Nancy is a very dedicated, patient, and pleasant tutor. My daughter works well with her. Nancy is always reachable and flexible with the schedule. The lessons are well prepared and my daughter loves all the discussions and the different view points Nancy brings to the table. I will certainly recommend her as a literature tutor.
Thank you, Prabha! I have really enjoyed working with you and Radhika! She is an awesome girl and you and Mark have raised her so well.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
M.Ed. in TESOL/Applied Linguistics from Temple University Japan, 2002. Later, in 2008, I was back at Temple teaching Academic English to mostly Japanese (and, interestingly, to many Saudi Arabians as well!) students wanting to improve their TOEFL scores and their competencies in academic reading and writing in order to get into a university in the US.
I'm an autodidact when it comes to French (and Japanese, for that matter!) - I've taught myself. I took the required six years in junior high and high school and then lost most of my French during my 26 years in Japan! About five years ago I started up with a French tutor and started reading French books and watching French TV and movies and joined a French expat group here in Orange County. I'm not a native speaker, but I'm confident I can help any struggling student.
In addition to 26 years living and working in Japan, I passed the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Exam in 1997. I taught JSL to students from around the world, grades 1-9, at Aoba Japan International School in Tokyo from 2000-2005.
I have helped several students improve their theses for a master's degree with good results!
