Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had 12 years working directly with individual students with learning disabilities. Many of those had struggles with attention. By educating students and parents about the disorder and training them to set structure, they understand the problem better. I also help the students find their strengths in memory, analysis, and comprehension in addition to working on their specific attention difficulties. All this results in measurable improvement in school.

Bible Studies

As an active Christian I have studied both the Old and New Testament as literature, history and theology. Many of my students are required to memorize and analyze scriptures. My skills as a reading and writing specialist are particularly useful in tutoring the Bible.

Dyslexia

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Disorders. I have been trained in Lindamood-Bell Phonemic Awareness, Orton Guillingham programs for dyslexia and other processing disorders.

For the past 12 years, I have worked with students with all types of communication issues and have found that a process of multi-sensory training with an emphasis on specific decoding and encoding skills can bring a significant improvement in reading, writing, memory, and comprehension.

Before I went into private practice, I was a classroom teacher. Therefore I can also be helpful in guiding parents in relating to teachers and administrators when dealing with their children with disabilities.

ESL/ESOL

Living in Spain for two years taught me to empathize with the particular struggle to learn a second language. Since then I have taught Spanish in the classroom and as a tutor. In addition, I have been an English instructor to Chinese individuals in the Bay Area. Because I am a reading and writing specialist, my understanding of how to teach the basics of English is well founded.

Phonics

I have had extensive training in the Lindamood-Bell Phonemic Awareness. This program uses a multi-sensory approach to teach the initial sounds of English. Assessment of reading and phonic problems is simplified, and a very structured approach to remedying reading problems is laid out. I have had great success using this method and the companion STARS program for spelling. Children not only feel the letters, but visualize them within the words and become adept at manipulating sounds to create words.

Public Speaking

I have had a great deal of experience in public speaking. For 4 years I have taught marriage communication courses in the East Bay. I am a guest lecturer to youth, young adults and couples in California and out of state. In college I helped organize and judge forensics competitions at High School and University levels.

Reading

Having been trained in a variety of reading competency programs allows me to target the specific problems and needs of students. All these programs (Lindamood-Bell, Orton Gillingham, Barton) use a multi-sensory approach and focus on phonemic awareness in a logical and graduated system. They are very effective and children improve their decoding ability as well as comprehension. These programs have been proven to be very effective for targeted intervention for problem readers.

Spanish

For several years I taught Spanish at the high school and middle school levels in the Antioch School District. For the past 10 years I have given private tutoring sessions. I lived in Spain for some years and studied Spanish extensively at the university level. As a reading and writing specialist it is very convenient to apply those teaching techniques to the study of Spanish as well.
Since I am not a native speaker myself, I understand very well the misunderstandings students have with Spanish as a second language. This is very helpful in heading off potential problems and spotting where confusions interfere with learning.

Special Needs

I have a degree in Communicative Disorders. For 12 years I have worked one-on-one with students diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Visual Processing Disorder, Central Processing Disorder, dyslexia, memory issues, low comprehension. Before that I was a classroom teacher in the Antioch School District. I use a combination of methods to target the specific intervention needed. I have been trained in Lindamood-Bell, Orton Guillingham and Barton phonemic awareness visualization and verbalization processes. These are powerful and effective tools to assist students with their disabilities.

Speech

I have had a great deal of experience in public speaking. For 4 years I have taught marriage communication courses in the East Bay. I am a guest lecturer to youth, young adults and couples in California and out of state. In college I helped organize and judge forensics competitions at High School and University levels.

Study Skills

Many of my students need help with study skills. I teach them how to manage their time and energy resources. They learn how to prioritize and organize their lives. Learning to set goals, keep commitments, and remember and analyze material is crucial. Most students are terribly busy and they need to learn not only care for their grades, but to care for themselves by sufficient sleep, proper diet and exercise and the healthy addition of fun. All this will make them better students, and happier as well.

Writing

Writing is the most complex and taxing communication skill. It requires good imagination, vivid vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, spelling competency, verbal organization, and a keen understand of audience. Each of these abilities needs to be strengthened and practiced. As both a classroom and private teacher I have spent many years working with students to improve their individual writing skills. Whether for school applications, homework or work-related assignments I can significantly aid in your writing proficiency.
