I am a highly successful high school physics and earth science teacher and tutor since 1996. I have been certified to teach physics and earth science/geosciences in three states including California. Courses that I have taught include Conceptual Physics, General Physics, Honors Physics, Advanced Placement Physics (both Calculus and non-Calculus based), Advanced Topics in Physics, Astronomy, Earth Science/Geoscience, Meteorology, Oceanography, Algebra Readiness, Algebra I, Algebra II and Precalculus/Trigonometry.
My undergraduate education was completed at Pennsylvania State University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1983. After working in the HVAC industry as a consulting engineer, I returned to graduate school at West Chester University to complete my teaching certification in Earth Science and a Master of Education degree in Secondary Education in 1996. I first entered the teaching field in the public school setting, where I worked for four years on the east Coast before relocating to the West Coast and have been working as a high school physics/geoscience/mathematics teacher for the past fifteen years. Outside of the school setting, I have had a proposal accepted by NASA for inclusion of a project that was carried into space aboard space shuttle Endeavor for ten days during mission STS-108 in 2001. I also have organized astronomical star parties to educate interested persons about astronomy and navigating the night sky. Each year that I taught Astronomy/Earth Science, I took my students on a field trip to a major science center, including the Chabot Space and Science Center (CA), The Exploratorium (CA), Goddard Space Flight Center (MD), The Tech Museum (CA), and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (DC) as a culminating activity for the course.
Please note the diversity of work experience that I possess, which is one of the reasons that my students are able to benefit so greatly from my teaching style. Aside from having worked as a mechanical engineer in an industrial setting, I also have worked in both the public and independent school settings. Thus, I have a multiplicity of skills to draw upon for identifying appropriate teaching methodologies for engaging students in order to maximize the effectiveness of their learning. I enjoy working with students and being able to help them achieve their maximum potential so that they, too, will experience the excitement and joy of learning to understand the physical workings of the world around us. I very much look forward to being able to help you in achieving success in your academic endeavors! I am a highly successful high school physics and earth science teacher and tutor since 1996. Philip is an outstanding tutor for AP Physics C with Calculus. His instruction combines foundational knowledge with practical examples with focus on AP Physics C exam. He is patient and gifted at making complex subjects easier. Our son got a 5 on this AP exam and could not have performed as well without guidance from Philip. We recommend him to anyone looking for a Physics tutor.
Philip is a great tutor, highly recommended. He helped me pass college level Astronomy and Algebra. I wouldn't have done nearly as well without his help.
Mr. B. was very patient in his explanations and didn't mind repeating himself until I understood the topic. He really knows his physics and provided a lot of outside/extra materials to aid in practice and studying. His explanations included a lot of real world examples, which was very important for me to really grasp the concepts. I know I wouldn't have gotten an A in my physics class at Cal had it not been for the help I received!
We have been 100% pleased with Phil's tutoring. He gets right down to business, knows how to conduct an efficient and worthwhile tutoring session, and is absolutely up to speed on anything AP Physics has to offer. He is an excellent experienced tutor.
My son is extremely happy with Philip's tutoring. He has struggled to keep his grades in his advanced Science and Math classes the B range in the past, but now is consistently achieving A's. He attributes this to Philip's tutoring.
Bottom line - his tutoring was impactful, helped focus our daughters studying efforts, and made a big difference with her performance. She did exceptionally well on the ACT exam due to many factors and Philip's tutoring was one of the key reasons for her success. He was flexible with location/times, patient, and very thorough. I don't think you can go wrong with working with Philip on any subjects he supports as a tutor. I will utilize his services for my younger daughter when she gets closer to the age for taking either the SAT or ACT.
The following are my son's and daughter's reviews of Mr. B.
Before I began my tutoring with Mr. B. I was receiving low 70 percents on all of my AP Physics B exams. I had tried other tutors and nobody was making a significant impact on my understanding or grade in the class; this all changed though when I met Mr. B. The first lesson I had with Mr. B. was awesome, I was able to understand the subject (Electric Forces) and the way he taught it got me really interested in the subject. For the first time this year I was enjoying the class and when I went to take the test I got a 94 percent. I continued my lessons with Mr. B. and continued to excel receiving a 95 percent on my next test (Sounds and Waves) and a 97 percent on the one following that (Physical Optics).
Overall Mr. B. is a GREAT tutor! He is very easy to keep in contact with, he motivates and makes a student interested in the subject they are learning, and above all else he knows how to teach.
As a sophomore in Algebra 2 I struggled with my test preparation skills. I was understanding the concepts on the homework and in class, but it seemed when test day came around I was lost. After my first session with Mr. B my confidence in my knowledge had increased so significantly that I went from a 75% average to a 90% average.
Mr. B's understanding of the subject was incredible and his teaching style is unforgettable! I HIGHLY recommend Mr. B to anyone struggling in any math! He is easy to communicate with and determined to help his students grasp each concept to the fullest.
After successfully completing my Algebra 2 course with an 86% I will go on to Pre-calculus and Honors Physics A with confidence that I will have such an AMAZING tutor by my side whenever I need a little extra help.
Philip is a excellent tutor! My son has worked with Philip over a dozen times and has never been disappointed.
Philip is an awesome tutor -- my son liked him the very first lesson for his patience and dedication. he is flexible and accommodating for scheduling sessions.
My daughter always appreciates the Philip's explanation of Physics. He is very patient and explains concepts in a simple way that makes sense for my daughter. There is no way she could have gotten through physics this year without Philip's help.
We have found Philip to be an exceptional tutor and great match for our son. He is able to build off what our son already knows and quickly assess the building blocks that he is not so sure of.
Philip is an excellent tutor. I'm always impressed by how well prepared he arrives for our session and how thorough his explanations are. His persistence to explain the material in alternate ways is a relief for any student who finds themselves overwhelmed by the "one size fits all" approach of many fast-paced courses. I highly recommend Philip for anyone that needs the extra help!
Philip is a great teacher. He helped me tremendously with my college physics class by clearly explaining how to do each problem with a very noticeable sense of enjoyment. He really loves physics and teaching it to others. Not only is he a great teacher but he's also patient and a very friendly guy. I never felt embarrassed by not understanding something or intimidated either. I felt comfortable with him and very privileged to have him as my tutor. Thanks so much Philip!
I found Philip to be an effective, encouraging, diligent, and patient Physics tutor. He went beyond my expectations by preparing answers to my questions before our sessions. He has a thorough grasp of the material and is able to convey even complex ideas in straight forward language. He is flexible in his approach and clearly uses his experience with many students to adapt his teaching style to the individual student. I highly recommend him and plan on using him to help me through my next semester of Physics.
Philip did a great job for our daughter in Algebra II in short order. She had been struggling throughout the year as the teacher had difficulty getting the details across to the students. After about five sessions with Philip, our daughter was given the boost she needed to grasp the concepts, which allowed her to significantly improve her grade on her last set of tests including doing a fantastic job on the final. We would definitely use Philip again, if necessary.
Philip helped my son study for his Algebra final and was very patient and thorough. I would recommend him to anyone who needs help from the basics to more complicated topics.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
