About Edward

Hello! I started and now run a company that provides IT solutions (web site, databases, mobile apps, etc) to small businesses. In my free time, I can tutor students in Computer Science and / or Business. I believe I am different than other tutors in that my background is in IT & business (and not in education). I have worked as a business consultant for over 17 years with some of the most prestigious consulting companies (Accenture, IBM) and with clients in Fortune 500 companies. So in addition to teaching you how to program, I can provide insight on HOW programming is used in the real world. If you are interested in learning about business, let me take you beyond just the textbook and give you skills that can be applied to life beyond the classroom. If you are interested in getting into consulting, I can even share what to expect for your first interviews or your first clients. I remember after my first year of work after graduating how much different the business world was to academia and thinking about how useful a tutor with real world experience would have been. I am passionate about sharing my experience to help build the next leaders of tomorrow.

I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley back in 1998 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (with a focus on Computer Science). I have general programming skills, but have specific expertise in Java, C++, and Visual Basic. I have extensive experience with databases (Oracle, SQL Server) and can help with understanding SQL, designing databases, and how to build real business systems.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you!

Thank you Jennifer. It's been a pleasure working with Kyle and watching him learn some very difficult concepts.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have 17+ years of working as a business and IT consultant. I worked five years as manager at Accenture, two years as a senior manager at IBM, and the rest of my years as an independent contractor and subject matter expert at various clients. My specialty is in implementing IT business systems, but also have experience in process design, strategy, organizational design, and startups.

C#

I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and learned C++ back then. C# is a relatively recent language and popular language for business applications today - as it is sort of a mix between C++ syntax and Java, but using the .NET framework. I do C# and .NET programming for a number of my business clients today and am well qualified to teach this to potential students.

C++

I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Back then C++ was the language of choice for the curriculum. I am proficient in the language and have used it in industry as well.

Computer Engineering

I have 17+ years of working as a business and IT consultant. I worked five years as manager at Accenture, two years as a senior manager at IBM, and the rest of my years as an independent contractor and subject matter expert at various clients. My specialty is in implementing IT business systems which a common application of computer science to the business world.

Computer Programming

I have 21+ years of active programming experience, having originally learned how to program with my degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer at UC Berkeley in 1998 and having programmed in industry for over 15 years. I am still actively programming today with the startup company that I have founded.

Computer Science

I have 21+ years of active programming experience having originally learned how to program with my degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer at UC Berkeley in 1998 and having programmed in industry for over 17 years. I am well familiar with theoretical computer science (e.g. algorithms, data structures, object oriented programming) as well as practical application.

Java

I have 17+ years of active programming experience having originally learned how to program with my degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer working at UC Berkeley in 1998 and having programmed in industry for over 17 years. Java, Javascript (or some derivation of it) is the language of choice for many of the projects I have worked on.

Microsoft Access

Working as a business consultant for many years, I have worked with and on many different types of MS Access databases. I started with MS Access 2000 and have also used the latest version that is included with Microsoft Office 365. I have covered Access from many different angles - from designing new MS Access databases to integrating the databases into existing business systems. I am well versed in how to create tables, queries, reports, forms, write VBA, etc.

Microsoft Excel

I have 17+ years of working as a business and IT consultant. I worked five years as manager at Accenture, two years as a senior manager at IBM, and the rest of my years as an independent contractor and subject matter expert at various clients.

MS Excel is a part of working in a corporate environment, and I have used it extensively throughout the years and almost on a daily basis.

I have extensive experience in some of the more complicated parts of Excel - such as VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts. More importantly I know how to format and populate data correctly to allow users of the spreadsheet to slice and dice data (business analytics).

PHP

I run a business providing web design services to small to mid sized businesses. PHP is the most common programming language in web design, and I have built many custom websites by modifying or writing new PHP code.

SQL

I have 17+ years of experience designing and building IT business systems. Most (if not all) systems are backed by a database. Understanding how to write SQL has been a critical skill for most of my projects.

Visual Basic

I have used Visual Basic extensively on many projects within industry. I can write stand alone Visual Basic programs along with VBA to modify Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Access).

Web Design

I run a business providing web design services to small to mid sized businesses. I can help tutor you in helping maintain your existing website or create a new website from scratch.
