University of Minnesota (English)
I recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in English and a minor in Asian Studies. Throughout the past eight years of my life, I have developed passions for both writing and Japanese. After taking a trip to Japan my junior year of high school, I fell in love with Japan and its culture and people and knew that I wanted to continue pursuing this passion in college. I have been studying for eight years and eager to assist any beginning or intermediate learners interested in Japanese, or to help any ESL learners, especially if they speak Japanese already. I have also been writing novels for nearly ten years and would love to help others develop their skills in this area, as well as general reading and writing. I also have experience with the AP English test. I am very kind and sensitive to other's learning needs, and care deeply about the well-being of my students. Being paired with two Japanese language partners made me realize just how much fun teaching, as well as exchanging language and culture with others, can truly be! I am excited to meet you.

Our daughter has been asked to learn piano for quite a while. However finding a teacher who's patient with kids and is willing to teach a kid without previous exposure to piano was tough. Luckily we found Melissa. She's classically trained and has been great in making the lessons fun for our daughter. What we appreciate in addition to her diligence in preparing for the lessons is that she's been super punctual and communications have been very easy. Highly recommend Melissa to any parents who's looking to get their kids to start on piano.
Melissa and my son talked extensively about the book's themes and how they related to the characters. She helped plan an outline, proof read the various drafts, but in the end made sure that my son did all the writing by himself. That's the only way to learn!
Melissa is a knowledgeable and patient teacher for my 14 year old son. She is punctual and easy to communicate with. I recommend her for any beginning to advance piano instructions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a native speaker of English and graduated with a B.A. in English in 2013. I am a published freelance writer, blogger, and novelist. I also have experience teaching ESL to students in Japan for three years from elementary to high school. I have helped students develop their writing, grammar, vocabulary, and conversational skills.
I am JLPT N2 certified and have been studying Japanese for over ten years. I graduated with a minor in Asian Studies and completed 3rd and 4th year advanced Japanese courses with top grades. I also lived and worked in Japan for three years from 2014-2017. I have experience tutoring basic Japanese and as I have a high level of proficiency I can also teach intermediate through advanced level students. I am proficient in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and comfortable with teaching all four skills. I also have a passion for Japanese culture, manga/anime, music, food, pop culture, and write freelance articles about these subjects.
I have been playing the piano for over fifteen years. I took weekly lessons with a teacher for seven years, and practiced avidly on my own. My lessons included practicing scales, sight-reading, and performing in recitals.
After ending my lessons I continue to play and practice for fun, amassing a collection of my favorite sheet music. I also have experience teaching beginner and intermediate piano to young children through teenagers. I am very patient with little ones!
I have learned excellent study skills throughout my many years of schooling, especially during college. Time management is the most important area to me, as I always wrote down due dates and started projects early so that I would not have to scramble at the last minute or pull all-nighters. I find it is also important to devote specific time in a suitable environment with few or no distractions to achieve the best results. For preparing for tests, it is essential to take good notes, review reading assignments, and go through additional worksheets, etc. that the teacher used as a part of class. Having managed to keep an average 3.8 GPA throughout college in addition to working part time, I have excellent knowledge of study skills to tutor others and help them be successful.
