About James

For the better part of the last two years I have lived with a family from Palos Verdes as a tutor for their student who needed help improving his SAT score (now working with him at UC). I work mainly in La Verne and Rancho Cucamonga tutoring subjects from Algebra to Historical Critical Interpretation.

I was previously the Education Director for the Boys and Girls Club and worked for DUKE in their (TIP) Talent Identification Program. I worked for Capitol One and Boeing and as an assistant for an executive interview at RIOT Games of CEO and COO, Mark Merrill and Brandon Beck. This was all done in cooperation with SET cable of China. Three years ago I transcribed an article for VOGUE magazine of China.

My last 20 years of work have been in academic study. I have studied Ancient Greek, Hebrew, Latin and Spanish, and the culture and history of their discourse authors. I truly, truly enjoy explaining things and I am excited to help you. Thanks for taking a few minutes with my page and feel free to ask me anything!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I played basketball in college for 2 years and coached middle school girls basketball in Claremont.

Bible Studies

I have a BA in Biblical Studies and a MA in Divinity from Azusa Pacific University. I can read the text in Greek and Hebrew as well as discuss any theological bible questions ad nauseam. I have tutored in this subject for 16 plus years as well as worked as a pastor and small group leader. I can teach on interpretation (hermeneutics, exegesis), Christology, systematic theology, multicultural evangelism, honor and shame, history, setting, pericopes, genres, chiasms, antithetical and synthetic parallelism, merisms, and the beliefs of the Ancient Near Eastern cultures. There is much more to this area of study than people are aware. If any other specifics are needed, please ask.

Elementary Math

Finding a way to connect ideas is key!

I bring the right amount of patience and helpful connecting ideas to tutoring. By using careful, slow instruction and taking the time to question students about their interests, I develop a very customized learning environment.

I truly enjoy helping people do more than turn in assignments. I enjoy helping them become life learners.

ESL/ESOL

James has tutored Mandarin Chinese speakers and Spanish speakers in English. As a native speaker of English and a studier of foreign language, he is aware of both the subtle and formal rules of etiquette.

Film

I took 4 years of acting for television from Renee' Raudman. The class used Roy Londons style of method acting. I have done interpretive work on over a thousand films and read multiple books on interpretive style and creation.

I have created and edited over 50 products and worked alongside BIOLA's Film chair.

Public Speaking

I have taken 4 years of Film Study acting lessons and performed in front of 500+ people multiple times. I have professionally spoken to groups of 50+ in classrooms and I led a small group of 24 people for 2 years.

Reading

If you come to me for nothing else, come for critical reading skills. I have spent the last 13 years studying extensively and debating publicly what can be implied from written text. Not just the letter but the spirit. If you want to be an accurate interpreter of information both written and oral, come to me. Not to mention I got a perfect score on their reading test.

Religion

I have a Master's degree in Divinity. My degree includes over 90 masters units in Ancient Near Eastern cultures and worship, Third World theologies, occult practices, divination, Buddhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism.

My area of interest and specialty is biblical theology. See my bible section for specifics.

SAT Reading

Critical Reading.

As I work with students I explain the understanding behind the logic of each TYPE of question. As I help students understand how THIS problem works, Students begin to recognize when they see that same problem later. Eventually their scores go up because the same logic is used over and over with different terms but the answers are always the same.

Training students in the logic of reading comprehension is much easier than attempting to memorize all the vocabulary that could possibly be on a test. Although if you are shooting for a perfect score you cannot expect to arrive there without significant time spent memorizing obscure vocabulary and its origins.

The 1st question in a section (sometimes first 2 questions) is very easy. It is easy on purpose. That's because the test writers need MOST of the people to get the average score. Many bright kids try to overthink the 1st couple questions and end up missing the easiest problems. Always go with your 1st answer on the 1st few question, don't over think it.

Reading through a passage is about details and meaning. Answers about details are simply found in the passage, these are easy. Answers about meaning though are subjective and require practice. Look for repetition, contrast, expectation, action, means, and purpose. And if you don't know how to do that, give me a call.

Tennis

I played tennis in high school competitively at a Quad A school and placed 5th at Districts. I taught for the City of Yakima, both children and adult classes.

Very engaging and creative!

We have been seeing James for a few weeks now and we have been very impressed with his teaching style and communication. He spent time getting to know my daughter and has been assisting her to better comprehend and interpret ideas and concepts that she has been struggling with. He checks in with me as well to make sure that he is addressing any academic concerns I have for her that she may not hav
