Cal Poly Pomona (Biology)

Having been a student myself, I completely understand how utterly frustrating it can be to not pick up a lesson right away. Thus, as a tutor, I have made it my goal to help students improve their grades and study skills through guided reinforcement of lessons taught in the classroom. I provide supplemental instruction via additional lectures, quizzes, tests, and worksheets. It sounds like a lot of work BUT I also try to make each tutoring session fun by highlighting practical applications and/or using non-traditional examples for the lessons. For example, instead of using the traditional plastic tiles, I have been known to use M&Ms or Hershey candy bars to teach children their fractions. Kids are usually satisfied by the end of their tutoring session because they realized that not only have they learned their fractions, they can eat them, too!
In terms of my background, I possess a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Cal Poly Pomona (Graduated Summa cum Laude, McPhee Scholar and Valedictorian with a cumulative GPA of 4.0). I also hold a Master of Science degree in General Biology from Mississippi State University. I have 11 years' worth of tutoring experience and the subjects I have taught include everything from 1st grade Math to college-level Biology and Physiology. In addition, I also have extensive experience with test prep including the GRE, ACT, and SAT.
My former students have come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and have ranged in age from first graders to college and post-baccalaureate pupils. I am extremely dedicated to my pupils and regard their academic success with the utmost importance. Thus, I can assure you that I will do EVERYTHING in my power to help you or your child reach your academic goals. Aleli is an amazing teacher! Not only did she show a level of patience most professors during college would not show me, but she was able to translate convoluted information into a clear and concise explanation. I always felt confident with her lessons and experience. More importantly Aleli was devoted to my education and made sure that I understood the lesson before moving on. I was very satisfied with Aleli's tutoring and will not only recommend her to everybody, but will also be in contact with her the next time I need a tutor.
Great tutor for my children. Very patient with them and very knowledgeable about many subjects. She showed concern in not only their school work but their personal interest also. Very accessible.
Aleli is my daughter's AP biology tutor. She is a very pleasant tutor and is good about explaining hard material to something simple, makes students understand better. I would recommend her to anyone who needs a knowledgeable and qualified biology tutor.
I can't think of anything more embarrassing than telling my fifth grade son..."I'm sorry Jack, I don't understand how to do your math"! Thanks to Mary I can provide the assistance he needs. Today was our first session with her and I was impressed with her ability to explain to my son how to solve his math problems. She was firm with him when he started to wander (he's all boy) and very patient and showed a genuine concern towards his success with mathematics. You are the answer to my prayers. THANK YOU MARY!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I regard this subject as my area of expertise. I majored in General Biology, conducted research in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics, and have tutored all levels and areas of biology, from high school biology to molecular biology and advanced genetics.
As a researcher, I have a very good background in biostatistics/biometrics since this field of study is crucial to analyzing my experimental results. I can teach you how to choose and execute the statistical test that is appropriate for your data set. Statistical tests include but are not limited to: Paired sample t-tests, Goodness-of-fit tests, Correlations, etc.
In the midst of regular schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and just being a teenager, I know how utterly stressful those college applications can be. Even though filling out those applications and writing those entrance essays seem daunting, I know I can help you get through them. Having worked in my college's Office of Academic Programs (an job that involves advising current and incoming college students and working closely with the Office of Admissions), I know what college counselors are looking for in their applicants. I can help you get your information organized so you can write that perfect college entrance essay! My former students have gone on to be accepted at places such as UCLA, USC, Guilford College, and Occidental College.
A good number of my tutees have been elementary students. I have taught all of the major subjects including reading, writing, math, and science. I try to make each lesson fun by using practical, everyday examples that children can relate to (eg: using candy bars to teach fractions). I also design simple experiments to teach science concepts to children (eg: Using water with food coloring, 2 plastic cups, and a piece of paper towel to teach diffusion and osmosis).
My emphasis as a grad student is in the field of genetics and molecular biology. I have taken multiple courses in advanced genetics and my current research focuses in practical applications of genetics and molecular biology (I am currently investigating suppressor mutations and sperm competition in the nematode C. elegans.) Specific subjects in this field that I have taught previously include, but are not limited to: two-, three-, and four-factor crosses; complementation tests; population genetics; DNA replication; transcription; translation; quantitative genetics, etc.
I have taken multiple courses in microbiology and I use this subject every day in my research since I use bacteria as a food source for my nematode test subjects. I can teach you proper aseptic techniques and help clear up your confusion when it comes to lessons such as antibiotic mechanisms in bacteria, bacterial physiology, and current applications of microbiology in today's scientific world.
Part of being a great student is having good study skills and the main tool for obtaining a good set of study skills is organization. I can help you or your child get your lessons and other learning tools organized. Afterward, I can help you identify the mode of learning (auditory, visual-spatial, etc.) that best suits you. Finally, I can help you design a specific study "program" that uses your new found organization skills to accommodate your mode of learning and maximize academic success.
