Proven results in helping students improve written and spoken communication. Engaging lessons encourage critical thinking and problem solving skills. The first step to learning is to discover what motivates you. As a journalist on a small town newspaper for 5 years, I mentored high school students in writing newspaper columns. As an ESL teacher for most of my career, I have motivated hundreds of students in improving written and oral communications to become successful in colleges and universities. I have helped people improve their English language skills to secure jobs and promotions. Two of my greatest joys are teaching and delving into the world of English language. Karen is my current ESL teacher and I am very satisfied with the way she teaches. She is very patient and attentive. No matter what I ask, her explanation is very easy to understand. She prepare many different materials every time such as newspaper scripts, story books and etc. so that I can stay focused on the lesson and don't lose interest. I strongly recommend her as the best ESL teacher.
Thank you for your recommendation and kind remarks Jake. It's rewarding to know that the lessons are interesting and helpful.
Karen is very professional, she worries that I understand things well and really practice the language. She also delivers visual support, such as copies, newspaper articles, so that I can review my vocabulary at home. I am very happy to be taking classes with her.
Thank you for your recommendation Cynthia. It is important for me to know that you are understanding concepts and language presented in the lessons. I'm even happier to know that you are able to study and practice at home on your own.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a B.S. Degree in Journalism and a Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). I have worked in Community and Workforce Development for Adult and Continuing Education programs teaching job search skills, applications, resumes and job interviews. Recently, I've worked as a volunteer for the State of California Employment Development Department Job Club to guide Veterans and other job searchers into career paths, training and employment. Through WyzAnt, I have already provided assistance and editing for two students needing college letters and essays. The college essay reflects aspects of a resume and should contain a strong mission statement of purpose and personal reflection of one's accomplishments. Besides being truthful, narratives should demonstrate how an individual will benefit from the company/institution and vice-versa.
In Junior College, I was on the debate team, reader's theater and served as secretary of the ASB all of which gave me experience as a youth in public speaking. As an ESL teacher, I coached students to write and present speeches and I have been active in Toastmaster's International. With the Employment Development Department, I have coached clients to prepare them for job interviews.
I learned to swim at the YMCA in Alhambra, Calif. when I was 2. I can still remember how scary it was for me and can relate to beginning swimmers. By the time I was 5, I spent the entire summer in swimming pools. By the time I was 9, I was swimming out to ride waves in the Pacific Ocean. In high school, I was a top-ranking freestyle swimmer and our relay team took top awards in San Gabriel Valley competitions. My grandfather, a cliff diver, taught me how to perfect my stroke. I taught my 16-year-old daughter how to swim when she was 2 starting with kicking, blowing bubbles (kids love to do that anyway) and floating (relaxing after you are able to control your body by kicking and are able to not take in water by breathing properly) As a show-off teen, in recreational swimming, I consistently won races against top (male) athletes (varsity football and basketball players, Ha-Ha!). I love the water and being in it. There is a great amount of freedom, relaxation and exhilaration in the experience of water immersion. I am CPR and Red Cross first aid accredited. I understand the angst associated with pools and large bodies of water for many people, especially adults who are more familiar with incidents of drownings, etc. It is important to listen to these concerns and only take on what an individual is prepared to do and is capable of doing. Progress comes with baby steps and patience.
