About Matt

I received my Bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences from Harvard, and my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the Scripps Research Institute. I specialize in test prep for the SAT, GRE and LSAT. Unlike most people, I've always enjoyed taking standardized tests. While I don't expect everyone I work with to feel this way, I want to lower people's anxiety and make them recognize their strengths. I have some experience in college teaching, and have worked as a tutor for the past two years for a national tutoring company. I really like teaching people individually because many people do not learn well in a classroom situation, and it's easy for someone to get left behind without anyone knowing or caring.

Every student has different needs, but in general, I want to find the place where you are comfortable with the subject and build from there. With test prep the issues are usually test anxiety, test-specific skills, and subject knowledge. I enjoy this work both because the subjects are interesting to me and because I enjoy helping people succeed at something and overcome the obstacles that may be holding them back.

I actually had a lot of trouble with math when I was younger, and it took me a while to get past that. Because of this I can understand how to help people get past difficulties with math, having been there myself. Even though I'm a scientist, reading and writing are probably my strongest skills. I've always felt that this is the core of education. Verbal skills can take some time to improve, and require knowledge of the rules as well as a sense of whether something sounds and "feels" correct.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GRE

I have tutored for the GRE since 2014.

Microsoft Excel

I have 11 years experience using Excel (Mac and PC) in scientific research and financial charting.

Great SAT Tutor

I struggled with the SAT Math section very much, and a few lessons with Matt has made me few more comfortable with it and set up a good foundation to further study it. He is a great tutor who makes sure you remember the information you learn.
