About Ellen

I am a 2013 graduate from the University of California, Berkeley where my tutoring experience began. I spent two semesters helping student athletes in the Athletic Study Center produce quality essays and develop strong study skills. After college I was accepted into the Teach for America program, which placed me in Nashville, TN to teach 5th grade English for two years at a highly effective charter school. Afterwards, I helped run an after school program for immigrant and refugee students in the Nashville community.

In the time I've been in education, I've learned a great deal about the craft of teaching. My biggest take away is that every student learns differently and it’s imperative to create ways for students to see incremental success so that their confidence grows along with their mastery of the content. That’s part of the reason I love tutoring. The one-on-one environment is excellent for honing students’ specific skills and helping them develop strategies that best support their unique learning style.

I am most excited to work with students in the following categories:

Elementary - high school students: reading comprehension, phonics, literature, essays, SAT prep, elementary or middle school math
College students: essay writing and editing, GRE Prep
Any age or grade: organization and study strategies

I am available Tuesdays and Thursdays in the mornings. (8 am – 12 pm). I am also available Wednesdays all day (8 am – 8 pm). If you or you student needs help in any of these areas please reach out. I look forward to meeting you! :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I was a middle school English teacher for two years, and an after school program coordinator for one year, at a very successful charter school. We didn't have much Exceptional or Special Education support so I worked closely every day with my students who had 504s and IEPs related to attention deficit disorder. I have many strategies for keeping them engaged and interested in the content, including kinesthetic learning principles, calculated breaks to improve focus, and incentive systems to keep students motivated.

Common Core

I have taught common core standards for 2.5 years as a 5th grade teacher and tutor. I am familiar with the conceptual framework of common core standards and their rigorous push towards skill based learning instead of content based learning. I was accepted into the Teach for America program, which placed me in Nashville, TN to teach 5th grade English for two years at a highly effective charter school. Afterwards, I helped run an after school program for immigrant and refugee students in the Nashville community.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have passed the Middle School Content Praxis Exam. I taught 5th grade English for two years at a very successful charter school, STEM Preparatory Academy, in Nashville, Tennessee. I currently tutor 3 elementary school students in English and Math.

Political Science

I took many political science courses as an undergrad at UC Berkeley. I have a degree in a related field, international development. I tutored college students, helping them write and edit essays for political science classes.

Social Studies

When I took the AP US History and AP World History exams in high school, I earned a score of 5 on both. My major in college (international development studies) was an interdisciplinary major that focused on Latin American social and economic development. Almost every course I took was a history course, whether that be history of Southern Border, history of the Mayans, history of Colonialism of the west, etc. I earned a 3.75 GPA in my undergraduate career proving I mastered this content. I believe success with social studies is really about your study habits and your ability to comprehend large amounts of information, synthesize, memorize and find connections and lessons between the events of that history course.

Study Skills

I have personally developed a large repertoire of study skills and strategies that helped me earn a 3.75 from UC Berkeley in my undergraduate career. I utilized notecards, outlines, developing practice quizzes, great note taking habits, etc. I also tutored fellow peers at the Athletic Study Center while I was an undergraduate to help them build up their own study strategies. As a teacher, I worked with middle school kids who learned in all different ways. Helping my students succeed in this atmosphere even further widened my understanding of how to help students of all ages succeed in school.

Writing

Between my various tutoring channels, I've helped nearly 60 high school, college, and graduate level students with writing assignments. I started when I was an undergrad at UC Berkeley, helping student-athletets organize and edit their papers.

Upon leaving the classroom after being an English teacher for 2 years, I wanted to continue working with students. I've since assisted and edited papers in a variety of subjects ranging from a graduate level Education dissertation to weekly blog posts for an environmental science undergraduate student. Whether its research, brainstorming, organization, grammar, or formatting, I can provide targeted feedback and support.
