About Jennifer

I am a Special Education teacher at a High School where I have taught English 9 and Study Skills since March 2014. I have expertise working with students who have learning difficulties and have been successful in helping them succeed in the general education classroom setting.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude for both my Masters degrees. The first is a Masters in Science specializing in Special Education with students with Mild/Moderate Special Needs, as well as a Masters in Cross Cultural Education with a Single Subject Credential in Social Studies.

This year I received the National Life Group “Life Changer of the Year” award and participated on the A team during the last two years in the Center on Secondary Education for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (CSESA) study conducted by San Diego State University.

I am highly skilled at being able to connect with students who struggle and enable them to tap into their motivation to do well. Over my educational career spanning 24 years, I have taught students of all ages from preschool to high school in formal and volunteer settings on four different continents.

My greatest strength is effective communication with students and parents and most importantly, getting results.

If your son or daughter needs extra help - let me know, I can help! I will get back to you immediately.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have over 3 years experience as a Special Education Teacher at the high school level and have had significant success with helping my students be successful in the general education classroom. I have my Master's in Special Education from National University with a special education credential in mild/moderate disabilities.

My research project for my Masters was specifically about ADHD and medication. My methods in assisting these students is to provide them with structure, help them to see their success in incremental steps and to assist them to lengthen each moment of focus by connecting what they are learning to something that is meaningful for them. I have learned over time that patience and positive affirmation have led to students making the greatest strides.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have my Master's in Special Education from National University. I hold a special education credential in mild/moderate disabilities. I have additional authorizations for Autism and English Language Learners.

Classics

I have a single subject credential in Social Studies as well as a university course which I took for a year in the history and appreciation of classical music. I have always had a passion for all the subjects pertaining to the roots of classical civilization including literature, history, art, music, philosophy and politics. In teaching students about the classics, I share my love for them with my students and engage as much as their senses as possible with poetry, literature, music, art and history to engage their interest. Once they find and connect to the beauty of the subject matter, it becomes easier for them to remember facts and concepts about what makes them so enduring.

Dyslexia

I have just completed my Master's in Special Education from National University. I hold a special education credential in mild/moderate disabilities.

In working with students who have dyslexia, I have taken time to understand their perspective and how words appear jumbled and mixed up to them. I use games to help teach them the phonic and phonemic dimensions of reading so they can learn how to blend the individual components of words into one coherent sound. My approach is first to create a warm and caring learning environment where students feel comfortable about something they have struggled with and then take a methodical approach to teach step by step using various ways of learning: visual, auditory and kinetic approaches and help them build on success and grow their confidence.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught a year of Montessori for kindergarten and 1st grade teaching students how to read and write as well as developing curriculum and teaching them math. I also have four years experience substitute teaching for middle school where I have taught a lot of 6th grade. In my voluntary time I teach children in the neighborhood from ages 3-14 how to read, spell and write. My approach is that I always start where students feel comfortable and then help them with gaining success in their next step, whether it be in reading, writing, comprehension or math. In teaching subject matter, such as science or social studies, I always infuse a passion for the content as well as games and relevance to their lives to gain their interest.

Music History

In addition to my passion for studying musical history of all kinds, whether it be rock, pop, jazz etc., I also took a year long class at Rhodes University in South Africa. The class emphasized the history and appreciation of music and focused on classical music. Listening to the music while studying its musicians and their style and place in history, is essential to understanding its significance. I incorporate as much as possible visual and kinetic modes of learning while teaching about this subject.

Social Studies

I have a single subject credential in social studies and journalism.

I have been an active substitute teacher for the last four years and have also just completed my special education credential in mild/moderate disabilities and my research project was specifically in using differentiated instruction to assist students to be successful in multiple choice exams in social studies. My methods assisted my students with special needs included creating concept maps and using games and mnemonic devices to remember key facts in history which helped them to improve their scores dramatically.

Special Needs

I have just completed my Masters in Special Education from National University. I hold a special education credential in mild/moderate disabilities. I have additional authorizations for Autism and English Language Learners.

Study Skills

I have just completed my credential in Special Education with an emphasis on mild/moderate disabilities. At the heart of my curriculum is teaching students with various disabilities study skills so that they can be successful. This encompasses techniques such as taking notes to learning how to highlight information, to creating index cards with key concepts and information. I also teach students how to "chunk" information into smaller units and teach them mnemonic strategies to remember a great deal of information that is useful when they need to recall large amounts of information.

Jennifer is the BEST!!!

My six-year-old son was having some trouble with his reading. He was behind in his class and it was a constant struggle to get him to read with us. It would start out well enough and then dissolve into tears and fights. We decided to bring someone in to help us, not really knowing how this would turn out. When we first met Jennifer we immediately loved her! She is incredibly warm and friendly. V
