I have recently retired from a successful 28 year career with a major corporation. I participated in the company's volunteer tutor program, tutoring grade school children in English and math. I am currently a tutor with the Literacy Action Center.
I maintained a 3.95 grade point average in college at Purdue University, majoring in psychology. I also have an academic certification in Program/Project Management from the Daniels College of Cusiness at the University of Denver.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified Master Gardener. I received my certification from the Utah State University extension service. I volunteer at Red Butte Garden arboretum in their horticulture program, maintaining their famous gardens. I have also volunteered at Gilgal Gardens, creating and maintaining their gardens. I love gardening and my neighbors always comment on my beautiful gardens. I also maintain about 70 gorgeous house plants in my home that are thriving.
I am an excellent cook and love to make nutritious and delicious meals for my friends. Some of my favorite dishes include pizza, enchiladas with mole sauce, guacamole dip, chicken and pasta, salmon and rice, a variety of interesting salads, and many yummy desserts. I also make many delicious low-fat versions of several dishes, as well as raw food desserts.
Some of my special interests are grammar, spelling, phonics, usage, formatting, writing skills and math. I am currently tutoring a student via the Literacy Action Center and specialize in the above areas. She is making great progress and so will you!

I am working with a woman from Afghanistan. Her principle language is Farsi and I am teaching her English as her second language. We have a lot of fun and look forward to our time together. She is making significant progress. She was a teacher in her country and she wants to get a teaching certificate in the U.S. She is making significant progress and has already passed a few classes at Salt Lake Community College.

I have experience tutoring grade school kids in phonics. I believe that teaching phonics is the key to the fastest and easiest way to enable students to make progress in reading and understanding English. Phonics is very logical and makes sense to students, so they are able to learn English better.
