About Julie

I am a recently retired Elementary School teacher. I taught second and third grade for over 17 years in the Conejo Valley Unified School District up in Los Angeles, but after retiring moved down to San Diego to be closer to family.

I have a passion for education and an unwavering commitment to optimizing student and school success. I also believe it is important to make learning fun. Even though I am retired I love teaching children and therefore am tutoring students in Elementary School subjects such as Math, Spelling, Reading and more.

My past students (and parents) have told me how easy I made the learning process for them and that their students looked forward to coming to tutoring each week. I think it is important to keep the learning environment fun and relaxed. I do this by being patient and explaining problems in different ways and using examples that they can relate to. I also think it is important to celebrate successes and reward hard work. I typically create a calendar (tracker) for each child to use to track when they practice and/or do their homework. Once they reach the goal we've set we celebrate with things like a new pencil, toy and even ice cream for special occasions!

I'd love the opportunity to tutor your child! If you have any questions feel free to message me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

When teaching handwriting, I focus on one component at a time -- first, letter formation (form and slant), then size, and then spacing. For the first component I usually have children trace the letters with their index fingers before they begin writing. To practice letter proportion (size), I teach using handwriting paper with a dotted middle line. For spacing, students can use their pinkies to measure the correct distance between words. Lastly, lots and lots of practice!
