About Rebecca

I am a graduate student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography studying Climate Science and Policy. I completed undergrad at Boston University with a BA in Marine Science. I have a passion for the environment and dedication to working with students! From my coursework, and community service, I have extensive experience in education whether as a teacher, student or peer. I have worked with special needs children in numerous organizations on Long Island and Boston. I have been a private tutor for five years to children with Asperger's, ADD as well as mainstream students. My clients have been with me for years and I have seen my students become more confident and excited about learning. I primarily work on homework and understanding concepts usually on a weekly basis. For exams, I come prepared with study aids and exercises.

After two years of working at sleep away camp with children and young adults, I have a firm grasp on how to educate developing minds whether it be kinesthetically through my job as a gymnastics specialist, or more traditionally when tutoring in elementary school subjects. The camp was a small non-profit organization that encouraged innovation in counselor leadership. Furthermore, I have dedicated many hours to the program “Aceing Autism”, a national organization that asks volunteers to come to local rec centers and teach tennis to kids with autism from six to eighteen years old. A group of my peers and I began the Autism Speaks chapter at Boston University three years ago and still maintain a partnership with this program which contributed to our “Excellence in Student Activities” Award for Community Service from the University.

I have worked in science communication as a conservation intern for the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District, where I edited a children's story about nutrition and eating sustainably. The story was circulated throughout public schools on long island to use as an aid for teachers in their classroom instruction. During my time interning, I created an interactive lesson on Aquifers for students on Marine Education day. I love what I do and I have a lot of experience with non-traditional learning in addition to conventional tutoring.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
