About Victor

Hello everyone, my name is Victor and I'm a NanoEngineering major from UC San Diego. Throughout my academic career, I always seemed to consistently grasp difficult course material in my Math, Physics, and Chemistry classes, but that left me wondering why other people couldn't grasp the same concepts that seemed to come so naturally to me, so naturally I wanted to try my hand at tutoring some of my struggling peers pro bono. After helping my peers pass their classes, I felt a great sense of accomplishment and inspiration to help others achieve their academic goals.

While tutoring my peers, one thing that helped me out the most was my eclectic world view. My unique perspective on life allowed me to put seemingly dry subjects in different contexts, which made the material appear to be less dull and as a result my peers had a much easier time learning the material. One of my favorite moments in tutoring was when I was trying to explain the concept of entropy by relating it to a crowded venue during a Rock concert.

Despite my love for explaining things, I also like to teach students how to be self-sufficient. If a student doesn't present me with questions, I like to ask him/her questions as they attempt a problem. This way, I can gauge if a student understands something and engage him/her in the learning process. In an academic or a professional environment, self-sufficiency is key.

Since I am new to this service, please give me feedback. Despite all this rhetoric that's being thrown around, the most important thing in this discussion is the student's learning.

Thank you for reading! I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I got A's in all high school math courses. I am currently an undergraduate engineer at UC San Diego.

Algebra 2

I got an A in Algebra 2/Trig in high school. I was able to consistently get good marks in my math and science classes because of my strong foundation in Algebra 2.

Calculus

I just finished taking integral calculus, multi-variable calculus and other math courses at a college level in a science and engineering program.

Chemistry

I just finished three quarters of college-level general chemistry with good marks. I also have a lot of experience tutoring my peers in chemistry and have even prevented many of them from failing. I was the go-to person for chemistry help around my residence hall.

Elementary Math

I have very strong foundations in math given my current status as an undergraduate NanoEngineering major; however, I am also suited to work with kids. I have spent more than 200 hours volunteering for ARF: Animal Rescue Foundation, and while there I mentored many young volunteers and supervised them as they performed tasks for the shelter. Also, every year around Christmas I make toys for George Mark Children's House, a hospice for children. All these experiences I've had working with children have definitely given me the necessary intuition to work with them. Additionally my innate empathy and unique perspective on life allows me to tailor lesson plans that are suited specifically for each individual child I tutor.

Geometry

I got an A in Geometry during high school. Since high school I've taken many physics classes, which demanded a very strong grasp of geometry concepts.

Physics

I just finished four quarters of college-level physics. My professor for mechanics, Vivek Sharma, discovered the Higgs Boson.

Prealgebra

I'm studying nano-engineering at UC San Diego, so my grasp of math is pretty solid. I've also had experience tutoring middle school students in math and preparing them for the high school math placement test.

Precalculus

I got an A in Pre-Calculus for both semesters in high school. Since then I've done well in my Calculus courses.

SAT Math

I got a 700 on the SAT math. Also, I've had experience working with great tutors.

SAT Reading

I got a 760 on reading for my first attempt at the SAT. I've always been praised for my critical reading skills as well.

SAT Writing

I got a 770 on the writing portion of the SAT, and I've worked extensively with good tutors, which has allowed me to learn the proper approach to teaching for the SAT.

Trigonometry

I got an A in all trigonometry-related courses in high school, and my experience in Physics has strengthened my grasp of trigonometry greatly.

Great Algebra Tutor

Victor is one of the best tutors that my daughter has so far. He is very conscientious about tutoring what works for my daughter. His best asset as a tutor is that he is very observant. He catches quickly why her test results are bad even though she seemed to understand the concepts. Then he comes up with a plan to over come whatever the obstacles that my daughter is faced with. Since she starte
