About Franklin

I finished an NIH post-bac at UNM focusing on medical image analysis and neuropsychology. Recently returned from an internship in southern Brazil after having completed a science bachelors in the physics department at MIT. I served as an assistant teacher at the New Mexico division of Engineering For Kids and now I am in a graduate program at UCSD.

I want to help your child or student (or yourself) understand and fully appreciate the fundamentals. Nodding heads in my own personal experience isn't enough so my goal is to really help develop the student's intuition. Whether it be math, physical science, biology, engineering, systems thinking, writing, I want to bring enjoyment and richness into your child or student's learning and make it stick. So let's get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Electrical Engineering

I took two courses in Electrical Engineering at MIT so I know the basics well. Also, I am preparing to do a doctoral program in EE at UCSD so it's very much a part of my background and future. Topics I am familiar with:
- Analog Circuits: RLC passive components, filters, op-amps, diodes, frequency response, transistors
- Basic Signal Processing: Fourier Analysis, transforms, differential equations

Linear Algebra

I took two courses during college in Linear Algebra. One was a theoretical course (18.700 sophomore year at MIT) and the other applied (equivalent of 18.06 at MIT).

Linux

I have used Linux since 2007 on my personal machine. During several internships I have also used the Linux environment. I know the command line pretty well and how to manage the system not at the system administration level but definitely enough to teach the essentials.

Physical Science

Science Bachelors in Physics at MIT 2012

Python

I have worked with Python since my first summer internship in 2008 at Sandia National Labs. During that period, I taught myself the basics of Python in order to automate running and evaluating the results from a physics simulation. I did two projects using Python at Sandia Labs and I am definitely comfortable with the basics. I also took a winter Python course at MIT to fill in a few gaps in knowledge.

Salsa Dancing

I have danced for 9 years. My parents bought me a few lessons for a birthday gift and it has stuck ever since. Not many competitions or exhibitions in my past but I love salsa, bachata, mambo or merengue. Learning to dance gave me a good physical outlet and now I cannot go a week without at least one Latin night...

Web Design

I learned the basics of HTML/CSS/JS as a hobby. I am able to use most of these languages and search in the right place. I can teach students web-design and also about the useful resources around the web.
