About Andrew

Hello there,

I am a senior at University of California, San Diego, as a sociology major (with concentration in international studies) and political science minor. Prior to that I attended community college in Northern California, graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in Sociology. I have been an honors student in a prep high school, community college, and currently in a four-year program.

Academically, I have excelled in many subjects across a wide swath of time. As a high school junior, I received the class prize in United States history, the next year I received the social studies book award for the most outstanding graduating senior. I was a National Merit Commended Scholar, an AP Scholar, and graduated with Dean's Honors. My Associate's degree was magna cum laude, and at UC San Diego I've received both provost honors and honors from my residential college.

Besides history and the social sciences, I have become an accomplished public speaker since high school. Besides summer debate programs, I have also given a sermon to my church congregation, and been a spokesperson for political movements. Becoming a more articulate person, whether you are a native speaker or have English as a second language, is key no matter what career you aspire to.

Time spent writing for and editing newspapers, including publications with a large foreign writing staff, makes me a good fit for those looking for copyediting only on their assignments or presentations. If you would like more detailed help in constructing a thesis and creating a structure to convey that point, that issue is something I deal with every day in my studies.

My availability is pretty broad entering summer. Generally speaking I'm available after noon and am flexible with evenings.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

In 2008, I took the ACT and scored a 34 on the Science section. The skills involved in scoring well- taking apart a study, finding relevant data, and figuring out what information is important and what is just there to fool you- have been supplemented by a class in research methods, which along with another class in sociology led me to win the department prize in May 2013.

American History

I won the US History prize in 11th grade, given to the best student in that year who took any level of US History. The next year I won the Social Studies Book Award for graduating students, based on four years of history including US History. I took an honors level college course on US Economic History, and obtained a 730 score on the US History SAT Subject Test.

In 11th grade I took both AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics. This was supplemented by a college macroeconomics course in 2010 and an honor's course in American economic history. The latter included a presentation at the Cañada College Honors Symposium regarding original research I had done.

Government & Politics

Two years in high school, I was accepted to the Junior Statesmen of America summer program. Both years had a parliamentary debate workshop over various political and policy issues. I also took intensive courses in AP US Government and Politics, political communication, and Constitutional law. Senior year I completed AP Comparative Government and Politics as an independent study, scoring a 5 on the test.

In college, I have taken courses on comparative government, international relations, political economy, and American economic history.

During high school, a year as editor of the literary magazine and a year as co-editor of the newspaper means I proofread most (if not all) of what was published in those two works.

I have done freelance proofreading work for people for whom English is a second language, and also do so on a volunteer basis at Lang-8. The site allows English speakers to correct writing by people learning to learn the language.

Public Speaking

In 10th and 11th grade, I was accepted into the Junior Statesmen of America summer program, which included a daily debate program. In the latter session, I won a popular vote with a speech, rebuttal, and closing of a sensitive issue, facing off against a prominent student in the organization.

In fall 2012, I took Comm 110: Introduction to Public Speaking, for which I received an "A" grade. I also spoke at the Cañada College Honors Symposium, doing a presentation on environmental economics. In a non-academic setting, I have both given speeches and edit other people's speeches for protests or political campaigns.

Social Studies

In secondary school, I won the the 11th grade class award for United States History. The year after at the senior banquet, I received the social studies department prize as the best student in that subject over the course of four years.

College work includes honors work in economics, a department prize in sociology, and a perfect grade in indigenous anthropology.

I have tutored fifth and sixth graders in social studies as a volunteer of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula.

I have an A.A for Transfer in Sociology, Magna Cum Laude. I am currently a student at UC San Diego with Provost's Honors and Thurgood Marshall College Honors as a sociology major. Will graduate with a B.A in Sociology (concentration International Studies) in fall 2016. I have top marks in classical theory, sociology of race and ethnicity, research methods, and sociology of social movements.

Co-edited the literary magazine in junior year of high school. Active writer on the newspaper sophomore and junior years, co-editor in chief senior year. Senior project was a newsmagazine written by young writers in high school in college, tackling literature, music, and politics.

Maintain an active blog at Tutored writing and other subjects to 6th-8th grade children at Belle Haven Community School, a school with achievement problems and crime issues.
