Hi, I'm Joe! I graduated with a degree in Psychology with a concentration in East Asian studies. In the Ivy League some of the professors are world renown for excelling in their fields but not necessarily excelling at making concepts easy to digest for students as teachers. On the other hand some of the professors I had in community college were some of the greatest teachers I ever had and made material easy to learn. Having some bad experiences with those types of professors but great experiences with professors that made class fun and understandable has helped drive me to become one of the latter types of teachers.

My goal is to the students where they would feel confident enough that they feel they could teach the material to their grandparent. Things aren't truly learned if its crammed but rather if it's practiced often and accurately. I studied psychology in group settings when I was living in New York City and we tested each other often, usually after every break, just to make sure that everyone was up to speed. I started tutoring Japanese using this method

I studied psychology for about 5 years and along the way of my journey I learned a few tricks on how memory and learning works and used that knowledge while I was studying in groups and tutoring younger students. I used spaced repetition learning mostly but I like to implement novelty and spatial memory every once in awhile to speed up the learning process. I used these methods when I was studying Japanese language, East Asian, US, and Global history.

I had experience tutoring younger college students as a way to ensure that I knew material for the long term.

I have high expectations for myself and my students and I hope that they understand that learning is just like training for a marathon, the athlete practices almost everyday and using the correct form, as a student I would like to see the student go over what we learned and I'll ensure that they'll know subject correctly.
