About KD

My work with helping students better understand organic chemistry actually began when I was a facilitator for organic chemistry workshops for two years while still attending CSU Pomona. These biweekly workshops were a way to give students the extra help they needed outside of their scheduled ochem course and professor's office hours. Then during graduate school at the University of Iowa, I was a teaching assistant (TA) and led multiple discussion sections for both general and organic chemistry courses. I was a TA for several semesters and won the Department of Chemistry Teaching Award. Since then, I have been tutoring organic chemistry for students attending various universities.

I have been studying and/or teaching organic chemistry for nearly a decade and I still find it incredibly fascinating. I thoroughly enjoy helping others, especially non-chemists, understand why it is such a unique and valuable subject. I have found that it can be easier for students to study organic chemistry if they can see the value in its applications, and so I try to help my students see the bigger picture when any content in the course starts to seem like frivolous information.

There are usually a couple main reasons why most students struggle with organic chemistry. One is that the approach to learning ochem is almost completely different than what students have done in almost any course prior to ochem, including general chemistry. Ochem doesn't require learning too many mathematical equations like math or physics, and yet studying for ochem is also very different than learning the material in a lot of biology courses that often relies heavily on memorization. Organic chemistry involves many different learning techniques and requires students to recall and apply several concepts at once to solve each problem. The material later in the course, constantly utilizes concepts taught earlier in the class, so it is important to have a strong foundation in understanding the concepts as soon as possible. For students, looking at organic chemistry problems as a whole can often be very overwhelming. As a result, I like to encourage my students to try breaking them down into small parts that correspond with information they already know and then apply that knowledge to the problem as a whole in order to solve it. This approach can really help students realize that with enough practice, they can solve these types of problems on their own.

After receiving my ACS certified BS in chemistry at CSU Pomona, I went to the University of Iowa and earned my PhD in organic chemistry. I have been a teaching assistant and a tutor for organic chemistry for a number of years and through my experiences, I have learned to modify my teaching methods specifically to each student’s learning style in order to help them succeed in organic chemistry.

I am very easy going and patient. I make it a priority to ensure each student knows, that they can let me know whenever any topic seems even a little confusing. Regardless of whether it is a simple or complex topic, I do my best to help students understand concepts better and this often means utilizing my molecular model kit to allow visualization of the compounds in 3D. I'm willing to go over any concept more than once and use various explanations to make sure the student fully comprehends it and how to solve the corresponding problems.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Knowledgeable and caring — KD is a very knowledgeable and caring tutor. She knows the subject of organic chemistry very well and can answer my questions in a very clear, concise, and timely manner. She explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand. Before getting tutored by KD I was struggling and lacking confidence in my first quarter ochem class.. After getting two lessons with her I was able to improve my ...
