About Mohammed

I recently earned a Master's degree in History from UC Irvine. I have three years of combined experience working as a tutor, mentor, and teaching assistant. I have worked in college admissions at my alma mater, the University of Chicago, where I earned a BA in Gender and Sexuality Studies. I have also worked at UC Irvine as a Scholarship Counselor, where I assisted students with applications to prestigious awards such as the Fulbright and the Soros Fellowship for New Americans. I enjoy tutoring because I enjoy empowering students to become savvy critical thinkers and writers.

English is my native language. I have years of experience writing and proofreading documents both for my Bachelor's and Master's theses, as well as in event planning and communications. My GRE verbal reasoning score was in the 97th percentile and my analytical writing score was in the 93rd percentile. My performance on the SAT Verbal and Writing sections were similarly ranked.

In my Master's program, I specialized in United States History. My curriculum covered Early America, 19th-Century Slavery, and 20th-Century US Empire and Western history. I have served as a Teaching Assistant for a course on Asian American immigration and cuisine. I also scored a 5.0 on the AP US History exam.

I have a strong background in Film and Media Studies thanks to elective coursework at the graduate and undergraduate level. Both my Bachelor's and Master's theses focused on the aesthetics and history of film and media in the United States. I am adept at close-reading films, understanding analytical vocabulary, and applying theoretical approaches to film. While my primary focus is with popular United States film, I have some familiarity with experimental French and Chinese cinema.

I am happy to travel to a mutually agreed upon location or tutor online. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about my subject areas and tutoring services. Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

In 2016 I completed a Master's of Arts degree in History at the University of California, Irvine. I specialized in United States History. I also served as a Teaching Assistant for an upper-division undergraduate history course on immigration and food culture in the United States and East Asia. I graded student assignments and consulted with students in one-on-one appointments to discuss their work and successful test-taking strategies. I earned a 5 on my AP US History exam and have some familiarity with the SAT US History Subject Test.

Film

I have taken college and graduate level film courses. I am familiar with fundamental film analysis concepts such as "long shots," "continuity editing," and "diegesis." I am experienced in media studies and have conducted research that involved close-reading several films. Finally, I am well-read in film studies scholarship.
