About Oliver

You go as far as your verbal skill set carries you, not one step further. Your ability to write incisively, think critically, reason logically, and speak eloquently is the master key to unlocking all of the wealth and wisdom you've ever envisioned for yourself and your loved ones. Yet your schools have all but given up teaching these great differentiators, choosing instead to enshrine remedial social studies at the expense of verbal excellence. I offer you a private solution to this public failing--the most potent verbal weapons money can buy, but at a rate that won't break the bank.

I am a former litigator and corporate lawyer at the top ranked litigation firm in the country (Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher); I am an award winning writer whose literary background includes a publishing deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down) for a Wall Street roman-a-clef; and I am a published academic with articles appearing in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics.

I was Editor of the Cornell Law Review at Cornell Law School; I was a 5 time CALI award recipient, awarded to the top ranked student in the class; and I was valedictorian of the Communications Major at UCLA. Going back further, I was one of two students to score a 5 on the AP English Test and in the top percentile on the old SAT at Estancia High School. Now going waaaaay back, I was a GATE Gifted and Talented student at Adams Elementary.

With my instruction you'll achieve not just subject matter proficiency, but mastery; in today's ultra-competitive market, you require and deserve nothing less. I am easy going, unconventional, effective, and I believe that learning should be a fun challenge, not a dreaded exercise. I have connected personally with every student I've had the pleasure of teaching, and they better say the same of me. :)

I have taught, coached, and tutored students of all ages and demographics, both domestically and overseas, in verbal skill sets and related subject matters, including: advanced writing and composition, prose style, grammar, English, literature, rhetoric, public speaking, oral advocacy, critical thinking, verbal reasoning, logic, and standardized testing (SAT, ACT, LSAT, CBEST, TOEFL, GMAT, GRE).

My professional pursuits outside of teaching are demanding but entirely within my control, allowing me to adapt and respond to your scholastic questions and concerns both nimbly and flexibly. You should feel free to contact me 24/7. I know how it is.

There's a verbal master inside you. Let's get him talking.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a verbal specialist, I coach private students how to master the ACT English section. Each face-to-face session focuses on maximizing point gains and shoring up weaknesses. In between classes I use leading edge technological and multimedia resources for diagnostic testing and skill building. I have coached students to massive gains with a methodical and highly personalized approach that challenges each student's difficulty threshold and shores up weak points revealed through ongoing diagnostic testing.

ACT Reading

As a verbal specialist, I have coached private students worldwide how to master the ACT English, Reading and Writing sections. My goal for students is a perfect score. And yes, with the correct approach, perfection is possible.

I take a highly personalized approach utilizing technological and pedagogical best practices; my approach has students practicing at the edge of their difficulty threshold while focusing methodically on weaknesses revealed through ongoing diagnostic testing.

Beyond ACT and other standardized test prep, my writing and literary background includes a publishing deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down), academic articles published in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics, and numerous writing awards and grants, including the Walter Winchell writing award, the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Peterson Publishing Award.

I was a visiting professor of English Composition and Critical Thinking at UBA; Editor of the Cornell Law Review at Cornell Law School, where I earned Doctor and Master of Laws with honors; I was valedictorian of the Communications Studies major at UCLA; and I was one of two students to receive a 5 on the AP English test at Estancia High School, where I scored in the top percentile on the SAT.

CBEST

At UCLA I was heavily involved in mentoring at risk youth in test preparation, study skills, and college and career preparedness. After graduating as valedictorian of the multi-disciplinary Communications major, I formalized this into group coaching seminars in the CBEST, GRE, SAT, ACT, and TOEFL. Later, I added MCAT and LSAT to my offerings. In total, my experience coaching CBEST and TOEFL is roughly 18 months, with 100% success rate (for students who reported back).

English

My English and literary background includes a publishing deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down), academic articles published in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics, and numerous writing awards and grants, including the Walter Winchell writing award, the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Peterson Publishing Award. I was a visiting professor of English Composition and Critical Thinking at UBA, and I have mentored students from all over the world in the substance, structure, and style of English literature, aesthetics, and critical thinking. I was valedictorian of the Communications Studies major at UCLA, one of two students in my class to receive a 5 on the AP English test, and I scored in the top percentile on the SAT. I was Editor of the Cornell Law Review, and hold dual Master and Doctor of Laws from Cornell Law School. I worked for six years as an attorney at the top ranked litigation firm in the country.

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL privately and as a visiting professor at UBA for two years in South America. My clients were from local high school students to mid-career professionals. My teaching is focused on you gaining confidence and effortless fluency in conversational English, composition, literature, rhetoric, large group public speaking, verbal reasoning and standardized testing.

Grammar

My grammar and writing background includes two years as a visiting professor of English Composition and Critical Thinking at UBA; a high profile book publishing deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down); academic articles published in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics; and numerous writing awards and grants, including the Walter Winchell writing award, the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Peterson Publishing Award. I have mentored students from all over the world in the substance, structure, and style of English literature, aesthetics, and critical thinking. I was valedictorian of the Communications Studies major at UCLA, I was one of two students to receive a 5 on the AP English test at Estancia High School, and I scored in the top percentile on the SAT verbal section.

ISEE

I have coached grammar school through high school students to resounding success on all levels of the ISEE, SSAT, HSPT, and various other preparatory standardized tests used by private, charter, and religious schools to screen and place incoming students. A number of my students have scored in the top 1%, while a plurality if not a majority have scored in the top 10%. Where so many monolithic test prep companies, as well as individual tutors, go wrong is by teaching to the subject matter instead of teaching to the test. Many a bright student with relative mastery of the underlying mathematical, quantitative, written, linguistic, grammatical, logical, and other verbal concepts has been rudely awakened upon receiving his or her score. Why? Because the test designers build difficulty into the test not through the complexity of the questions, but through the trickiness of the answers, the unrealistic time constraints, and the subtleties embedded within the questions and prompts themselves. This arsenal of decoys, however, is deployed consistently and predictably, so it can be neutralized with proper coaching. That’s what I do. And it works. Very well indeed.

Law

I graduated with honors from Cornell Law School's joint Doctor and Master of Law (JD/LLM) degree program in International and Comparative Law, where I was Editor of the Cornell Law Review and 5x winner of the CALI award for the top student in the class. I worked for six years at the top ranked litigation firm in the country, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. My legal coaching is focused in three areas: writing A+ final exam answers, the art and craft of legal writing, and persuasive rhetoric.

Political Science

As major valedictorian at UCLA and the sole recipient of the Highest Honors diploma distinction, I completed two academic years of graduate level academic research and writing in Political Science and Political Communications under the tutelage of world-renowned Political Scientist Dr. Shanto Iyengar, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Stanford University. My original research article on the interplay of Political Science, Journalism, and Public Opinion, co-authored with Dr. Iyengar, was published in the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics, a first for graduate level research conducted by an undergraduate. I broadened and honed my theoretical and practical knowledge of Political Science, International Political Economics, and International and Comparative Law as part of my dual Master and Doctor of International Law Degree studies through Cornell Law School's Berger International Legal Studies Program, from which I graduated with honors and was Editor of the Cornell Law Review.

Proofreading

My proofreading, editing, and writing experience includes a high profile book deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down), academic research articles published in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics, and numerous writing awards and grants, including the Walter Winchell writing award, Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Peterson Publishing Award. I was valedictorian of the Communications Studies major at UCLA, was one of two students to receive a 5 on the AP English test at Estancia High School, and scored in the top percentile on the SAT verbal section. I was a visiting professor of English Composition, Rhetoric, Verbal Reasoning, and Critical Thinking at UBA.

Public Speaking

I was a child actor for film (e.g., Blue Marble), TV (Tim Conway Show), and stage (Christmas Carol - Tiny Tim), with years of formal voice, rhetoric and stagecraft training as a member of South Coast Repertory's Young Actors Conservatory. I was a member of the Estancia High School's Debate Team, and won first place in the District Final Extemporaneous Speaking Championship. I was chosen to deliver both my high school and college commencement addresses. I argued numerous high profile Appellate cases before Circuit Courts during my six years as a Gibson Lawyer. And I'm often invited by local and regional civic, political, and philosophical organizations to speak on topics ranging from international political economics, to law, morality, ethics, and epistemology.

Reading

My Reading comprehension, verbal reasoning and writing background includes a publishing deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down), academic articles published in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics, and numerous writing awards and grants, including the Walter Winchell writing award, the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Peterson Publishing Award. I was a visiting professor of English Composition and Critical Thinking at UBA, and I have mentored students from all over the world in the substance, structure, and style of English literature, aesthetics, and critical thinking. I was valedictorian of the Communications Studies major at UCLA, I was one of two students to receive a 5 on the AP English test at Estancia High School, and I scored in the top percentile on the SAT verbal section.

SAT Reading

I am a verbal specialist with a strong record of raising student scores significantly on the SAT reading section. It was not uncommon for my students to improve 100-200 points on the old SAT's verbal scoring system. I scored in the top percentile on the SAT reading and was one of the two students in my high school to score a 5 on the AP English exam.

SAT Writing

As a verbal specialist, I have privately coached students worldwide from mediocrity to mastery on the verbal SAT and other standardized tests, improving their scores several hundred points and altering the course of their lives. Given that the new SAT is significantly easier than prior versions, I anticipate several perfect scores from my students this Fall. I take a highly personalized approach that implements the best technological and pedagogical test prep resources; one that has students practicing at the edge of their difficulty threshold while focusing methodically on weaknesses revealed through diagnostic testing.

Beyond test prep, my writing and literary background includes a publishing deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down), academic articles published in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics, and numerous writing awards and grants, including the Walter Winchell writing award, the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Peterson Publishing Award. I was a visiting professor of English Composition and Critical Thinking at UBA; Editor of the Cornell Law Review when I earned my Doctor and Master of Laws with honors; I was valedictorian of the Communications Studies major at UCLA; and I was one of two students to receive a 5 on the AP English test at Estancia High School, where I scored in the top percentile on the SAT.

Study Skills

I started the Pipeline Program at UCLA, which bussed in hundreds of urban youth for a day of campus tours and hands on seminars that I took the lead in designing and teaching. Those seminars included study skills, test prep, and college admissions tips and resources. In addition, I took several classes in the multi-disciplinary Communications major that had a field work component that I fulfilled as a TA for inner city elementary, middle and high school classes in the surrounding community.

TOEFL

I taught TOEFFL test preparation for one year in Buenos Aires to Argentinian students seeking admission to U.S. graduate schools. Their passage rate was 100%. My writing, English, composition, and vocabulary background includes a high profile book deal with Grove Atlantic (Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down), academic research articles published in journals such as the Harvard International Journal of Press-Politics, and numerous writing awards and grants, including the Walter Winchell writing award, Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Peterson Publishing Award. I was valedictorian of my Communications Studies major at UCLA, was one of two students to receive a 5 on the AP English test at Estancia High School, and scored in the top percentile on the SAT verbal section. I was a visiting professor of English Composition and Critical Thinking at UBA.
