I am passionate about helping students succeed by improving grades and understanding in academic classes and increasing their test scores as much as possible.

I graduated from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) with high honors and a degree in Biochemistry. I then went on to complete graduate coursework and passed the CPA exam (arguably one of the most difficult tests out there). Currently, I am enrolled in the University of California Irvine (UCI) College Counseling Certificate program.

Academic tutoring has always been a part of my life and I have been tutoring for over 10 years. Throughout the last 10-15 years I have tutored my peers in college, worked as a private tutor for students at different levels of elementary, middle and high schools, and worked for a variety of test preparation companies. I stay current with the changing SAT and ACT tests by regularly attending workshops provided by CollegeBoard and ACT. I have reviewed every question on released SAT & ACT exams so that I can customize a comprehensive test preparation curriculum for each student. During an initial consultation, I analyze results of diagnostic tests, pinpoint strengths and weaknesses, and present a strategic plan to achieve highest possible scores.

My philosophy to tutoring is that every student is able to achieve results they have never dreamed of, they just need patience, guidance and breakdown of seemingly difficult topics into smaller, easier to understand ones. I believe that understanding leads to confidence which leads to better grades. I have personally achieved scores in the top 5% on both SAT and ACT and I have helped many students improve their grade point averages (GPA) achieve increases of 300+ points on SAT and up to 9 points on the ACT. I would love the opportunity to help you as well.

To stay current with the changing tests and being able to have a first hand knowledge of what it's like, I frequently take timed proctored practice tests. I have personally achieved a perfect 36 on several practice tests.
College admissions is becoming more and more competitive every year and although test scores are "just one" component of the holistic college applications review, it's a pretty big one. I strongly believe that solid education is a platform that opens many opportunities for students and my goal is to help as many students as possible to develop standardized test taking confidence and achieve excellent results in the college application process by gaining admission to their dream school.

Most high school students are already familiar with the level of mathematics tested on the SAT and ACT. The difficult part is to get through the many problems on those tests with high accuracy within the allotted time. I review math concepts with each student and teach "tips and tricks" and strategies to increase speed and accuracy, save time and achieve the best possible score for each student.

My college background is in science, and I love that tutoring gives me a chance to share my passion for these subjects with new students. I understand the math and science sections of the test and have proven success helping students with different educational goals - from those that are struggling to those trying to improve on an already respectable 33, I can help. Everyone's learning style is different and my strength is in my ability to break down, simplify and explain concepts even to those students who are not as comfortable or familiar with science as they'd like to be.

The English and Reading sections of the ACT and SAT have to do with reading speed, fluency and comprehension. I teach students how to not get intimidated by long passages in unfamiliar topics and, instead, break down every passage into it's components and saving valuable test taking time in the process.

In looking for the right tutor, you want to work with somebody who not only can help you achieve the highest possible test scores, but somebody who can also help you plan your path to college, help with college admission applications, essays and financial applications.

Disclaimer: I only accept students who are willing to put in the time and effort required to become a successful learner. I don't believe in 'cramming' or last-minute preparation, but with enough effort and practice, every student can achieve success. I have seen it happen time and time again. I would love the opportunity to help you achieve your educational goals!

English

ACT English,

ACT English

The ACT English test assesses your knowledge of English grammar and writing. On the test, you will have 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. That may seem like a large number of questions and relatively little time, but the English Test, more than any other ACT Subject Test, assesses what you already know, rather than what you can figure out if you are given certain information. Essentially, this means you can be completely prepared for the English Test if you study all the material it covers. I help students learn, understand and become confident in usage / mechanics questions; rhetorical skills question and the any other material covered by the ACT English portion.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading Test give you 35 minutes to read four rather lengthy passages and answer 40 questions on the passages. Because you have little time to do a lot of work, time is really of the essence on the Reading Test. Becoming familiar with the format and content of this Subject Test before you actually have to take it will help you use your time efficiently and effectively. Each of the four passages is approximately 750 words long and presented in two columns. Each passage is directly followed by 10 questions of varying difficulty, making a total of 40 questions on the Reading Test. The ACT includes a number of different types of questions in each batch of 10. The Reading Test consists of four passages: Prose Fiction, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science—always appearing in that order. Prose Fiction is the only fiction passage on the test; the other three are nonfiction. All four passages are given equal weight in scoring. Of the 4 subject tests, it is most difficult to prepare for the Reading Test. Doing well on the Reading Test is not a matter of having tricks up your sleeve. When you come to a question that asks about a passage’s main point, you can’t rely on some handy main-point trick to figure out the answer—either you know it or you don’t. That said, I teach students strategies to improve their performance on the test and how to maximize time by choosing the order of passages you read / answer questions for. The main part of the strategy is your ability to read well—that is, with speed and without sacrificing comprehension. The best way to prepare for the Reading test is to READ!!!

Those subjects aren’t hard, but they may cover minor details that you’ve forgotten—and which could be important on the test. I have had much success helping students achieve scores in the high 30's (33-36) and I would love the opportunity to help you too!

I have a College Counseling Certificate from UCI. Each student is different, so I get to know each student on a personal level to prepare an individualized college admission plan, not a "cookie cutter" one. I have worked with many students with planning their high school curriculum with their "target" college in mind; strategically choosing colleges; staying "on-top" of many college admissions deadlines; preparing best possible application packages; writing eloquent and polished personal statements, and applying for financial aid. Statistics show that most students apply to an average of 15 colleges and once there do no graduate in 4 years. Once admitted to college, I coach students how to choose classes, schedule study time and "free" time, be successful and graduate as close as possible to the 4 year mark.

SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

Students do not have to be grammar experts to do well on the SAT writing section. They need to know the 10 major grammar rules that are featured on the SAT. I help students focus on these 10 rules as well as the difference between an SAT essay and a school essay to increase their scores. I believe that a student at any level of writing ability can improve from my methodical approach to SAT writing.

Very knowledge SAT/ACT tutor

Anna is doing a great job with my daughter as she prepares for her sat's. I see her growing more confident as she realizes how to approach the test using strategic test taking ideas. She is also very patient and understanding as she has expressed to me she has felt a little intimidated by other tutors in past experiences.

Patient and concise tutor

Anna helped my son with structuring and writing essays. She has given my son a great sense of confidence with his writing ability. After trying out other tutors I am so appreciative of Anna's approach to working with my son. My sons paper last week was used as an example of great writing for the class. I am extremely thankful and grateful for finding Anna.

Great Tutor!!!!

Anna is extremely knowledgeable, very patient, an amazing tutor. She has been helping my 16 year-old daughter with her SAT/ACT studies for about a month now. When we first hire Anna, we knew she was a keeper. She was very flexible, accountable, and thoughtful right from the beginning. She takes her time explaining new ways of doing things. She assigns homework every week, making my daughter accountable with her "offline" studies. We are very happy with Anna's work and would definitely recommend her to anyone!
