Ready to reach your potential? I'm ready to give you a leg up! My name is Matthew, and my greatest strength is my ability to connect and communicate with people of all backgrounds. I believe that patience, persistence, and courage are the key to learning. Mistakes are your friend!
My fields of expertise are literary analysis, writing, and instruction. I have experience proofreading, tutoring, teaching test preparation courses (CAHSEE), and instructing non-native English learners. After obtaining my English degree, I went on to receive passing scores on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE), California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST), and the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).
I have mastered the English language and I love sharing what I've picked up over the years with reluctant learners and aspiring scholars alike. Reading and writing are skills that empower us to take charge of our lives, and I have spent my entire life expanding and refining my skills in these areas. I believe that the goal of writing should be precision and, ultimately, readability. The goal of reading, on the other hand, should be efficiency and, ultimately, retention. Achieving these goals is simple, but only if the right tools are provided!
Am I the right tutor for you? You'll never know for sure until you give me a shot. So let's get the ball rolling and we'll see how it goes!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a self-taught drummer and passionate percussionist. I've been drumming for going on 14 years, and I still play regularly with a band. I have given lessons many times to friends and family with much success. Lastly, I own both a full drum set and a vehicle large enough to transport it wherever need be.
My degree is in English, and I have assisted hundreds of students in improving their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills using a variety of empirically valid techniques.
I uphold a very high standard of professionalism, so regardless of whether you are male or female, young or old, etc., I bring my A-game!
Equally important: I am a people person. I connect, communicate, and collaborate well with just about anyone.
I have worked extensively with non-native English speakers on improving their speech and writing through informal conversations, fun activities, and formal study.
I have coached students who natively speak Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Chinese dialects, among others.
Additionally, I have taken college courses on strategies for instructing culturally diverse English learners, and I have experience learning foreign languages, so I understand the challenges faced by ESL students.
Lastly, I worked with struggling readers and writers to prepare them for the now-defunct California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE).
For going on 12 years, PowerPoint has been an important tool for my success.
I created them as a student for class presentations and I created them as a student-teacher for lectures and parent meetings.
I have received many compliments on the presentations I create and deliver.
Because PowerPoint features words and images, my eye for balanced composition and my talent for visual and verbal rhetoric equally come into play.
I am also proficient using Prezi and Keynote to create impressive slideshows.
My specialization is English, and my passion is writing.
In college and beyond, I have assisted many writers in reaching completion.
Moreover, I am an experienced writing tutor, having worked with a diverse range of native and non-native English learners.
Proofreading comes naturally to me, as I cannot help but read actively and critically.
Lastly, I am an intuitive communicator with a positive attitude, so people enjoy working with me!
I am an experienced stage performer, and years ago I was the assistant director for a theatre company. Moreover, I am familiar with the conventions of oratory, persuasive writing, and rhetoric, having studied and applied them extensively in college.
I have accrued considerable knowledge of performance, argumentation, English language conventions, and oral presentation technique. Lastly, I am proficient using PowerPoint, Prezi, and Keynote to bring speeches to life!
As an English major, I closely analyzed thousands of texts.
At least half of the texts were narrative, which require one set of reading skills, but the rest were expository and persuasive, which require entirely different reading strategies to be effectively and efficiently understood.
I have also learned that developing active, critical reading habits is essential, as it leads to higher-order thinking and better retention of information.
I have proven to myself that I can teach others the skills, strategies, and habits of mind needed to develop English literacy.
I am an excellent communicator, and writing is my passion.
I have worked as a coach, proofreader, editor, and collaborator for others' writing projects.
I have tutored in a writing center, as well as in students' homes.
I can teach the skills for effective narrative, expository, and persuasive writing.
In college, I consistently received high marks for writing assignments.
