About Naomi

In 2004, I received my M.M. in piano performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2006, I entered the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with full scholarship in piano performance and worked in the music department as a collaborative piano teaching assistant for four years. I taught both undergraduate and graduate students. During this time, I assisted the music department to prepare and perform in various opera productions, juries, convocations, chamber ensembles, lessons and seminars. In addition, I am frequently invited by local scholarship auditions and competitions to be a staff pianist. After receiving my degree in 2011, I continued to work at local music schools and at San Clemente High School as piano instructor and piano accompanist. In 2014, I was also hired by Cabrillo Playhouse as music director and pianist on short notice.

During my sixteen years of teaching, I have trained students of a variety of ages and ethnic backgrounds in both public and private institutions. In addition, I have taught classes that included ear training and music fundamental courses during my years studying in Taiwan. As a teacher, I strive to help my students develop a mindful and musical ear by stressing a genuine appreciation for music beyond the mechanics of piano instruction. For advanced students, I challenge them with an increasingly more technical and demanding repertoire. For the past several years, I sought and created opportunities for my students to perform in public and build their confidence, such as music competitions and local concerts.

Over my career, my performances have been recognized in multiple venues. To highlight a few, I was a first prize winner in the 2009 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition for my performance of Franz Liszt's Spanish Rhapsody. Cosmo Buono described my performance as a "tourdeforce" and "very virtuosic" on my performance on BeethovenVolodos Turkish March. Santa Barbara independent music reviewer James Hanley Donelan in reviewing my piano accompaniment to UCSB Opera Theatre's presentation of Riders to the Sea stated that my "accompaniment on piano supported the singers with gentle sensitivity, yet left us somewhat haunted.” These and other awards and recognitions speak to my commitment to a lifetime of learning and musical education.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
