About Steven

My education and experience in working with special needs students is quite extensive. I have a B.A. from UCLA in psychology, an M.S. from California State University, Fullerton in Education, a moderate/severe specialist credential from University of Southern California, and a secondary and administrative credential from California State University, Fullerton. I also have over 20 years of experience in teaching special needs students including students on the Autism Spectrum as well as low functioning, deaf and hard of hearing, legally blind and emotional issues students.

My experience has been successful because of the nurturing and structured learning environment that I create for the students and well as the positive reward system that I use with these students. I strive to make learning a fun, stimulating, relevant experience while letting students know that everyone learns and improves at their own pace. I make my students feel accepted, valued and important through an inviting, positive, structured and stimulating learning environment.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am a credentialed Special Education teacher. I have successfully taught many students with ADHD. With these students highly motivating instruction that keeps the student busy, involved and on task is very important. It is also helpful to have several, short breaks in instruction to provide the student with brief bits of release time in which to regroup. I also have a Master's degree in Education.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a credentialed Special Education teacher. With students on the Autism Spectrum I use a very structured approach using task analysis, an appropriate reward system and an appropriate behavioral management system.

English

I am a credentialed teacher with many years of teaching experience in public schools. I have successfully taught many students at the Elementary and Secondary levels in English. I also have a Master's degree in Education. Students improve their skills when working with me because I create a structured and rewarding environment in which they can learn and grow. After assessing each student to find out what their skill level is and where they need to improve I create a step by step program to help each student to improve their skills.

Phonics

I have valid credentials in Moderate/Severe, Secondary, and Educational Leadership. I also have many years of experience as a public school teacher in California. I have worked with ADHD, Autism Spectrum, developmentally low, deaf and hard of hearing and emotionally disturbed students.

Reading

For many years I have worked with students from 5 years old to adult teaching reading. I last taught in the Anaheim Union High School District where I worked with 7th and 8th grade students. I have 3 teaching credentials and a Master's Degree in Education. I use a phonics based reading approach in order to help students become independent in their reading skills and to improve to the point where they can read any new material that they are given.

Developing vocabulary is an enrichment process that helps students improve the scope and understanding of their reading. I have taught students from elementary age to college age to expand their vocabularies and reading skills. I have been a public school teacher for many. My last teaching experience was in the Anaheim Union High School District. I have a teaching credential and Master's degree from California State University, Fullerton as well as 2 other teaching credentials.
