About Douglas

My goal is to help you learn math, and to come to see that math is useful, interesting, and fun. I teach all kinds of math, but my specialty is pre-calculus (Algebra and Trigonometry). When I was a student, I wondered how useful all this math was. But I’ve used it again and again throughout my careers in engineering and philosophy. I would like to share my interest and enthusiasm for math with you or your children.

I have a Ph.D. in Philosophy from U.C. Irvine, a master’s degree in Biomathematics from UCLA, and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics/ Computer Science from the College of Idaho. Before I got my doctorate, I applied my mathematical skills for a southern California defense contractor. Currently, I teach Logic and Philosophy at several community colleges, and have also taught GRE and GMAT test prep, and so am available to tutor on these subjects as well. I am also very happy to help you with your writing, as I know what college professors are looking for, since I am one myself.

I am now married with two children in Irvine public schools. I appreciate the great schools we have in Irvine, and I would love to help you or your children succeed there.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Logic

Since receiving my Ph.D. from the Logic and Philosophy of Science department at UC Irvine (in 2004), I have been teaching Logic at local colleges since 2005. In 2005, I taught the Language, Proof, and Logic textbook, but since then I have been using the Power of Logic. The classes I have taught have been billed as "Symbolic Logic", "Introduction to Logic", and "Logic and Critical Thinking."
