Having recently completed my MA in European History at Claremont Graduate University, I've decided to take a break from higher education and once more offer my services as a proofreader and Latin tutor. Before my most recent master's degree, I completed my MA in Early Music at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2012 and earned my BA in Music from Chapman University in 2010. Before my most recent master's degree, I completed my MA in Early Music at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2012 and earned my BA in Music from Chapman University in 2010. I also undertook Ph.D. coursework at the University of Calfornia, San Diego where I was the recipient of a Regent's Fellowship.

I have also worked as both a Latin teacher for a private high school and as a college admissions counselor for an after-school, test-prep academy. Given my academic and professional background, I'm most comfortable tutoring students in Latin (levels I-III) and I'm happy to help students with the brainstorming, writing, and revision of their college application essays, research papers, and theses.

For students looking to meet more than once a week for four weeks or more, lower rates are available for negotiation depending on lesson frequency and duration.

Grammar,

Grammar

Being both a native English speaker and having studied more than five foreign languages, I possess a very strong grasp of the rules of English grammar. I implement this knowledge both in my teaching and proofreading/editing, explaining the rules of grammar—and their rationale—to the students with whom I work. With advanced students, I teach the finer points of punctuation and the use of grammatical devices for descriptive writing.
Latin,

Latin

I posses 200+ hours of experience by having peer-tutored Latin for high school community service. In graduate school, I passed my Latin Reading Proficiency Examination. Currently, I am working on translating a (heretofore untranslated) 17th-century document from Latin into English.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I spent two years a copy editor for graduate work-study, editing incoming documents for grammar, spelling, and citation style. I have proofread and edited college essays both independently and with a prestigious test-prep academy, helping students from all achievement levels to improve their chances of college admissions. I'm familiar with writing strategies for all the UC and Common App prompts, and have previously assisted students with writing cover letters for volunteer and summer program applications.

Friendly and knowledgeable tutor!

Mikael is a prepared tutor. He arrived 10 minutes earlier and waited for me. He was super nice and friendly. I asked him for proofreading on my UC transfer essays. Until he helped me, I was worried that a tour might totally change my entire essay that it might not look I wrote it. However, he carefully read my essay, and fixed grammars and content that fits to my writing level. Throughout the tutoring, he kindly explained what and why he was fixing on my essay. After all, the essay looked way better than it looked before. So I am satisfied to give him five stars. Thanks Mikael!

Great tutor. Enjoys his work and is awesome at Latin. My son has seen a 6% increase in his overall grade in only 6 hrs. of tutoring.

Mikael is just the best. He is very much in tune with the needs of my son and always offers detailed input on their progress. My son has found confidence in himself and knows that Mikael is someone that he count on to attack any obstacles that may arise in the future. Thank you so much for your help.
