About Mikael

Having recently decided to take a break from my Ph.D. program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), I'm once more offering my services as a Latin tutor and editor/proofreader. Prior to my coursework at UCSD, I was an MA in History student at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) in Claremont, California. Before that, I completed my MA in Early Music at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2012, following my BA in Music from Chapman University in 2010.

I'm passionate about working with students enrolled at all levels of Latin and I take particular pride in helping them find joy in puzzling out what—at times—can be a very challenging language.

I also recently worked in college admissions counseling and essay editing for an after-school test prep academy. There, I helped high-achieving IUSD students with their personal statements for their college applications to Ivy League universities, private liberal arts colleges, and the UCs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

Being both a native English speaker and having studied more than five foreign languages, I possess a very strong grasp of the rules of English grammar. I implement this knowledge both in my teaching and proofreading/editing, explaining the rules of grammar—and their rationale—to the students with whom I work. With advanced students, I teach the finer points of punctuation and the use of grammatical devices for descriptive writing.

Latin

I posses 200+ hours of experience by having peer-tutored Latin for high school community service. In graduate school, I passed my Latin Reading Proficiency Examination. Currently, I am working on translating a (heretofore untranslated) 17th-century document from Latin into English.

Music History

I have a BA in Music from Chapman University and an MA in Early Music Performance from the University of Southern California (USC). During my time at Chapman, I received special dispensation to tutor three different music history courses for the Tutoring, Learning, and Testing Center. In addition, I received the College of Performing Arts Music History Award for my A-level coursework in music history courses.

Proofreading

I spent two years a copy editor for graduate work-study, editing incoming documents for grammar, spelling, and citation style. I have proofread and edited college essays both independently and with a prestigious test-prep academy, helping students from all achievement levels to improve their chances of college admissions. I'm familiar with writing strategies for all the UC and Common App prompts, and have previously assisted students with writing cover letters for volunteer and summer program applications.

Writing

As a graduate student, I have substantial experience in writing research papers, literature reviews, and personal essays. I have coached several students in essay writing, with an emphasis on persuasive language, voice, and punctuation. I'm also familiar with MLA and Chicago/Turabian citation styles.
