Teaching mathematics, I aim to convey to my students the thrill of discovery that comes with true understanding. To do mathematics effectively is to learn actively, through some degree of struggle and trial-and-error. Otherwise, mathematics remains a disjointed jumble of intimidating facts, easily forgotten and never appreciated.

I meet students with varying skill levels, mathematical backgrounds, and academic goals, and I tailor my lessons accordingly. I bring out hands-on materials when a student needs help visualizing and making abstract concepts more concrete. I ask questions to encourage new ideas and involved learning.

Mathematics is such an important subject to get a grasp of, and is a prerequisite for a multitude of exciting professions. It is also a practice that can help a student develop as a critical thinker: learn to notice relevant information, make logical connections, and develop attention to detail.

Growing up in the former Soviet Union, I had difficulty with mathematics for many years, until one day my grandmother found me a tutor. With a little bit of help, I gained confidence, curiosity, and passion for this subject. I know how powerful and helpful a few hours of tutoring can be.

After moving to the United States, I graduated high school as a valedictorian, scoring 99% on my SATs, 5s on multiple Advanced Placement tests, and receiving full scholarship to the Cooper Union School of Engineering. I’ve taken multiple mathematics electives in college. For the past 6 years I’ve been working as a Web Engineer in the tech industry. Math and science are my favorite subjects to learn and teach.

I am always working to improve my tutoring sessions. I welcome all feedback, and will not accept payment unless you are completely satisfied.

I look forward to hearing from you and would love to help you gain success in your studies!

Knowledgeable and trustworthy

Leena is a great teacher, who has great ability in assessing the students, and then customizes the lessons toward the potential of each student. We trust Leena with our 2 daughters.

Prepared

Leena was well prepared for the lesson with examples of work to be completed that needed attention from the previous week's lesson.

Excellent tutor for my teen

Leena has been a big help with our teen who will take a placement test at the end of the summer. They are meeting regularly going through all chapters of Geometry book and reviewing practice tests. We are happy we found her.

Patient and thourough tutor

Leena was very patient and clear. I liked how she broke down the larger problems into digestible smaller ones. She was able to explain the logic of the program clearly and concisely which helped me untangle and rewrite the main part of the program. Thank You!

Knowledgable and Patient!

Helped with C programming, structures, pointers, doubly linked list, .h & .c files, and passing to and from functions different variables. She adjusted quick to a programming environment that she had never used.

Fun physics tutor!

Works well tackling unintuitive problems along with student, has strategies, is able to generate approaches to the difficult problem in real time without seeing it before, follows up afterwards with a recap of the problem and another approach to it. Professional!

Patient and Thorough tutor

She is an extremely patient tutor. We were able to go over a topic and work through problems thoroughly so that I could understand the concept and apply it to several different types of problems. She helped me think about the questions in different perspectives and made sure that I thought about what steps I needed to take in order to solve each problem.

Perfect Match!

As a parent, one of the most difficult things to know is the difference between coddling teens and pushing them into the deep end. When a parent finds that a tutor clearly knows that difference within the first hour of interaction with their teen, the parent knows a true gem has been found! Leena is our gem! With the overwhelming amount of possibilities from the WyzAnt website, we banked on Leena. She took a straight A student whose academic confidence had taken a beating by the abstract reality of Geometry Honors and grew it back to life. Leena's knowledge is undeniable; her ability to explain not just what you're doing but why was key; her ability in answering a students question with "what do you think?" was a phenomenal tactic in engaging the students mind to think on what they already know about math in general and helping them apply that knowledge to answer their own question; her ability to build the students confidence by merely showing confidence in them was stunning to watch. Oh, there was teaching going on too but anyone can do that... Leena did way more. She didn't just build a house, she built a strong foundation where that house would sit forever.

Very knowledgeable and very patient with young and older student

My son has been struggling with math for years. This year he is taking geometry honors and he really had a hard time during the first 6 weeks of high school. His previous math tutor always wanted him to do math only in a certain direction. He was very frustrated before and after lessons. Leena is very different and knowledgeable. She allows my son to explore different ways of solving. She can identify his learning difficulty. She is very patient and observant; she explains concepts very well, and is able to keep track of the areas you feel comfortable. She motivates my son to try. When my son loses focus and discusses about other subjects such as computer programming or game code, she can answer and brings the focus back to math. That would stop his curiosity. He is happy after each lesson. I can see my son is more comfortable with his geometry now. My 10 year old daughter is also taking lessons with her. She doesn't have problems with her 4th grade math so she is learning more advanced level from Leena. She really enjoys and feels comfortable to explore math beyond her level. We highly recommend her.

Effective, patient and comprehensive math tutor.

Leena has been a terrific help to our daughter getting back on track and then staying current in her Trigonometry / Pre-Calculus high school class over the past 3 months. Besides having deep knowledge of the material, Leena is able to assess strength and weakness areas and adjust her teaching style so that it is most effective for her students. She has not only helped our daughter to understand the material, but provided guidance about how to most effectively prepare and learn on her own. After approximately 30 hours of tutoring by Leena, we can safely say that we have a good sense of her capabilities and that we highly recommend her.
