About Jamila

Greetings!

I am a writer and scholar with a PhD in the Humanities, and fifteen years of combined experience as a writing coach/tutor and editor. Writing is my passion. Over the years I have worked extensively to help clients just like you develop and fine tune their writing skills, complete applications to undergraduate, graduate and or professional schools and realize their full potential. In 2007 I co-founded a graduate writing fellows program to help my University meet the needs of its graduate writing community. I have developed a niche in proposal writing, college admissions essays, personal statements, and capstone and term papers. As a result of my interdisciplinary training in the humanities, I am able to draw upon a variety of tools/methods to help you improve your writing, connect with your target audience and convey ideas with depth and clarity.

While I love working with students of all ages, my new role as a University Professor means that my time is limited, and since I do not want to detract from my University responsibilities, I can only take on a few select clients throughout the year in one of the following areas:

a) Professionals looking for editing only assistance with business plans, proposals, grants, papers and similar documents.

b) High school juniors and rising high school seniors looking for assistance with the ins and outs of applying to college. This includes offering a full range of college consulting services (I have had students go on to many wonderful prestigious schools/careers).

c) College students working on capstone projects, MA thesis, dissertations or term papers.

My experiences as a writer of both fiction and non-fiction as well as a teacher/scholar means that I am able to help you effectively convey complex ideas and information to non-specialist audiences, which is ideally what we all want in our writing. My approach to tutoring is to be engaging and innovative, considering each student as an individual and therefore not applying a blanket tutoring model to every student or every subject area. To this end I consider the whole student, their diverse backgrounds, interests and life schedules when creating and administering tutoring services. I enjoy conducting lessons both online, in person, and or using a hybrid model that blends a combination of face-to-face with virtual tutoring. I try to keep my rates reasonable because I believe everyone deserves access to great quality writing assistance, and good things remain within reach. So contact me today to get started.
Greetings!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

As a PhD in Cultural Studies I have taken at least half of my graduate coursework in History. Although my research is interdisciplinary, my approach is heavily historical. My undergraduate majors were also in English and American Studies so I feel very well equipped to address both areas. In addition I have worked for over ten years as an interdisciplinary writing tutor. I have experience tutoring students of all ages, academic levels and backgrounds. I have also worked with students for whom English is a Second Language and am comfortable working on areas of writing/comprehension.

English

I am a humanities Ph.D., researcher, and a freelance writer. My areas of expertise are fairly interdisciplinary, encompassing English reading, writing and literature, cultural studies and digital humanities projects. My undergraduate majors were also in English and American Studies so I feel very well equipped to assist students in a variety of humanities coursework. I will work with you to gain an appreciation for and understanding of plots, sequence, and related events that can influence a story's arch and a writer's perspective. In addition I have worked for over ten years as an interdisciplinary writing tutor. I have experience tutoring students of all ages, academic levels and backgrounds. I have also worked with students for whom English is a Second Language and I am comfortable working on areas of writing composition and comprehension.

Grammar

I began tutoring in a writing speaking and thinking center at Tufts University so I wholly understand how these areas are related and how tackling one will also help advance an individual's skills in the other. I also worked in a Center for Reading and Language Research and often assisted core researchers in administering reading assessments, and had the opportunity to create materials for some of the students they worked with in the program. I have experience tutoring people of all ages and academic levels, as well as experience tutoring people for whom English is a second language.

Literature

I am a Ph.D., researcher, and a freelance writer. My areas of expertise are fairly interdisciplinary encompassing English reading, writing and literature, cultural studies and digital humanities projects. My undergraduate majors were also in English and American Studies so I feel very well equipped to assist students in a variety of humanities coursework including world literature. I will work with your student to gain an appreciation for and understanding of plots, sequence, and related events that can influence a story's arch and a writer's perspective. In addition I have worked for over ten years as an interdisciplinary writing tutor. I have experience tutoring students of all ages, academic levels and backgrounds. Writing

I am a Ph.D. and freelance writer with over ten years of writing tutoring and writing center experience. In 2007 I co-founded a graduate writing fellows program at my graduate university that is based upon a peer tutoring model. I view writing, speaking and thinking as interrelated issues and hope to work with all my students to not only teach them grammar basics, but to help them to improve their writing, clarify their ideas and expressing them with confidence.
