About Michael

I have a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and have had two years of school work in a Ph.D. program in Mathematics. I also have been a teacher teaching Electrical Engineering and Mathematics in colleges for 3 years combined, and a tutor for Electrical and Computer Engineering for 6 years. I have been an engineer in the industry for many years. Most of these experiences were in the US. I have also had two semester’s worth of experience teaching a foreign language.

My teaching takes flexible approaches according to the student’s needs, learning habit, and knowledge level. For example, I may try to teach the basic principle for a particular problem, or start with a training procedure to accomplish learning through practicing, or maybe any other approaches depending on the situation. During the college teaching years, I developed the “Situated Learning” method which was a full success.

Academic areas that my teaching and/or tutoring covers are college level Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering. I can also teach Physics up to a high school level and Chinese as a second language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

My grades for Algebra and Linear Algebra were both 4.0 when I was a student. I taught Linear Programming in the college for 2 semesters which used knowledge from Algebra very often. At work I used algebra related principles for many years. Teaching and tutoring for Algebra is enjoyable to me.

Algebra 2

I know both Algebra 2 and Algebra 1 very well and I learned and used both of them many times and many years as a student, an engineer and a teacher. Teaching and tutoring for something that I know very well and very interested in like Algebra is enjoyable to me.

Calculus

My grades for Calculus were 4.0 when I was a student. I taught Calculus in the college for 2 semesters. At work I used calculus related principles for many years. I was also a tutor for Calculus for 1.5 years and enjoyed teaching and tutoring for Calculus.

Chinese

I was born, grew up and went college in the north part of China, where standard Mandarin was the native language. I have been teaching in the college and language teaching was part of it. Chinese language is still used very often in my daily life, and I enjoy teaching it very much.

Electrical Engineering

I got a Ph.D degree in 1996 in electrical engineering from Drexel University. I was a full time teacher teaching in electrical engineering in a college for 4 years. I also worked as an electrical engineer for more than 10 years with job titles as DSP Engineer, System Engineer, DSP Architect and Chief Scientist.

ESL/ESOL

English is a second language to me and I have built up tons of experiences in overcoming those obstacles in learning it. I was an ESL teacher and did a good job for the work using the knowledge and skills learned from my studies and experiences. If you want to learn from some one who has been in your situation and come out successful, we might want to talk.

Linear Algebra

I have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, and was in a Mathematics PhD program for 1.5 years. In both programs I took linear algebra courses in the graduate program level and got grades of 4.0 for each course. Also at work I used linear algebra often.

Precalculus

Pre-calculus is a set of knowledge and skills that I learned well and used very often for many years. I was a teacher teaching courses that used knowledge in Pre-calculus a lot, and was also a tutor teaching math closely related to it.

I like teaching all algebra and calculus related topics.

SAT Math

SAT Math was part of the tutoring job that I did before. I liked this part and did very well each time.
