Irvine Valley College (Business Administration)
My family and I immigrated to U.S from China When I was 13 years old. I am 22 years old now, and I am currently studying at Irvine Valley College. I took AP Chinese and AP Exam (scored 5) in University High school in Irvine (2011), while tutoring Chinese at the school library for two years (from Junior to Senior). In China, I received third place in the national writing contest at age of 11; It was a competition for students under sixth grades. I also have my essays published on local newspapers twice at 6th grade. In California, I received third place in the Southern California Chinese Calligraphy contest at age of 16; the contest took place in UCI. I have also tutored outside of school for an year or so. When I first arrived American, English was fairly new to me. After years of studying English, I learned the necessary habits and skills to learn a new language. In terms of teaching, I would not use a fixed teaching system like most school teachers do. Instead, I discuss and clarify what my students' goals are in Chinese, such as improvement in speaking or writing. Then I will establish a specific system that aims to achieve their goals. I am able to teach almost anything in Chinese that ranges from basic Pinyin to AP Chinese Exam. Since I speak and use both Chinese and English on daily basis, I know many handy shortcuts that can significantly increase the efficiency of students' learning and memorization.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
