I am a scintillatingly vivacious, shrewd, forthright, decisive, kind, diligent, efficient individual who does everything possible to help people succeed.

When seeking help from a professional, most consider the following:

*Experience:
-Any English-based experience you can think of is one I have had. With experiences ranging from years of English teaching in a middle/high school homeschool to intense dissertation revision, I specialize in giving you the absolute best experience with any English-based activity.
-I work with clients of all ages and within all academic, personal, and professional circumstances, so I am open to hearing about all situations. That said, I do choose to work primarily with high school students, college students, graduate students, and adult professionals.
-I have a secondary school English teaching certificate.
-I individualize the work we are doing to suit your needs, creating and adapting activities and expectations to match your skill level and personality. As I am well-versed in both creative and academic writing prompts, different genres of literature, and English-based activities, I am capable of designing goals and curriculum to orchestrate a fantastic experience.
-A majority of tutors dabble in various academic arenas; I, on the other hand, I am fully committed to and focused on one subject. My English work spans multiple skill sets and categories, ensuring you feel completely helped, inspired, and comfortable.
-In the same vein, something highly unique about my work

Theater

I have performed in various theatrical circuits as an actor, but my most valuable theatrical experience came in the form of a theatre collaborative, whereby each member of the group led everyone in theatrical activities and theory. It ensured I have the ability to theatrically teach and inspire. I have also completed a Shakespearean teaching internship, so I am particularly skilled at making Shakespeare something accessible to younger students.

Business

Career Development,

Career Development

I very much enjoy helping individuals advance themselves in regard to their careers. I am a motivational career coach, helping my clients believe in and harness their potential while also discovering new job avenues; I am also adept regarding cover letters, resumes, and interview preparation, some details about which are described below. I am a marvelously competent cover letter editor. Successful cover letters are very similar to effective essays and effective college essays, and I do EXTREMELY successful cover letter coaching and editing because of this fact. I have edited resumes for many clients and am able to transform a relatively dull resume into something with great potential to help someone get hired. I am adept at (aesthetically!) organizing information, emphasizing an individual's strengths, and altering the language of a resume to make it more assertive, varied, and precise. I'm also fantastic at helping prepare for job interviews. Talking points, personal anecdotes, prioritizing information concisely, confidence pointers, motivation, drilling--you name it and I'll drastically improve your shot at that job!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I am a licensed teacher. Because of this credential and the countless associated internships, practicums, and seminars I have partaken in, I am a very strong public speaker. In a classroom, one has to be clear, direct, and exhibit appropriate enthusiasm, all of which occur with my speaking. I also have had countless leadership experiences in which I needed to speak publicly. For example, in a sports setting, one's voice has to carry far to reach everyone spaced out in a large space such as a gym, and I would speak at fencing meetings and tournaments. When leading a board meeting--as I did for my community service council and theatre organization--one has to employ good communication and organization skills, keeping the dialogue everyone contributes to paced. I have spoken many times in these settings and innumerable more. It would be the utmost pleasure for me to help others with their public speaking, especially considering that it is a skill so many lack. Having even one individual who believes wholly in a student's potential to be a great speaker makes all the difference in the world!

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

Though not often seen this way, approaching a language from 'the outside' can manifest itself as a unique advantage. It allows for a certain objectivity and perspective not present for native speakers and can almost always be used to facilitate the improvement of the student. I have worked with several private ESL students over the years and have also taught 45+ students at Reading Town, a local ESL academy. Indeed, reading activities are one of the best ways to engage students in the process of language acquisition, and I believe in genuine, interesting learning experiences. One of my most memorable ESL teaching experiences came in the form of a 4th grade international student. She advanced hugely under my tutelage and became much more confident in her usage of language and overall presentation of self.
Grammar,

Grammar

What can I possibly say about a part of me that is so deeply-rooted and profound? I adore grammar and correcting it, but I am no proverbial 'grammar Nazi.' I feel that the term gets tossed around way too much with something similar to flagrant disregard. I am a grammar purist in that I respect the most basic and oft-overlooked idea behind grammar--that communication should be effective and precise, and without correct grammar, we present half-baked and sometimes incorrect, unpolished ideas to the world we are trying so desperately to engage with. I am fortunate enough to have grammar be such an intrinsic part of me that I immediately know how to correct any and all sentences, and I attribute this in part to endless reading during my youth. I am currently developing a grammar system for my students that makes grammar real and approachable instead of something archaic learned through overwrought rules that not only confuse, but leave much humanity to be desired. If you need to know anything more about my qualifications, I believe my reviews for and subject descriptions regarding my editing work speak for themselves. One of my favorite t-shirts says "Let's eat grandma" and then "Let's eat, grandma! Punctuation saves lives." Enough said. :)

Editing is one of my favorite things to do, and I am extremely proficient at furthering any student's writing. Editing is a form of magic to me, and I wield many wands.

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I work exceedingly well with younger students, able to bond with them instantaneously given their natural curiosity, passion, energy, and abundance of love for life and learning. This enables me to teach them in a way most teachers cannot. I have worked with hundreds of elementary school students during my time as a teacher, and each one has developed both quantifiable and inexpressible skills. I am very proud of my ability to leave an indelible mark as I further children's love of life and learning.

Homeschool,

Homeschool

I was the English teacher and homeschool principal (dealing with administrative matters and management of 3-4 tutors) for 2 homeschooled high school students for 2.5 years. In this time, I learned much about the legal aspects of homeschooling and how best to homeschool. This involved becoming well-versed in the idea of unschooling and gaining a lot of perspective about the nature of education itself.
Reading,

Reading

Reading comprehension is an absolutely crucial yet oft-neglected skill. It is far from being just educationally influential. Instead, it is an enormous influence in life at large. Everything required to become an aware, informed, innovative thinker can be developed with proper reading skills. It is this fact that makes me so passionate about developing my students' reading skills.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I routinely help all my students with their study skills, so it simply makes sense that I be certified. I stress organization and time management and consider myself adept at instilling these both in children and teenagers alike. I believe that time management and prioritization skills are among the most important things an individual can develop for him or herself, and I stress their importance to students in many ways--including, but by no means limited to, self-efficacy, independent work, structured lessons, and neverending encouragement--and expectations.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I use a very no-nonsense approach to preparing for the ACT, utilizing tips and tricks that are not usually taught about the test. I try to keep sessions regarding standardized testing lively and make them as fun and digestible as possible, as I understand any test prep can be difficult and stressful. Studying for any standardized test is a team effort between the teacher and student, so I ensure that expectations and communication are entirely clear. Session time is not wasted doing practice questions; instead, it is used as an opportunity to analytically examine difficulties and deliberately undertake efforts that facilitate comprehension and improvement.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have many years of experience with ACT tutoring, many fantastic testimonials not on my current profile, and the ability to speak with potential students at length about my experience. Reading comprehension is a crucial component of my ACT Reading tutoring and is addressed using a variety of means. Overall, I develop highly structured, efficient, creative, to-the-point ways to approach this section of the test. I also encourage my students to think critically about the test, offering suggestions for ways they can use their unique strengths. After students become familiar with the right way to approach problems in this section, they begin to see and understand these patterns.

I am a Smith College alumna with a degree in English and an English high school teaching license. As a self-employed, full-time English professional on Wyzant for the past 4.5 years, I have extensive experience teaching and guiding children, adolescents, and adults in a great variety of settings. Everything the subject of English involves is a true, profound passion of mine.

The realm of literature and all it contains is my forte and great joy. I teach people to analyze, appreciate, write--and revel in our shared humanity. I continually expose myself to lesser-known aspects of the test--an effort that requires continuous personal research and discussion with colleagues in an effort to stay ahead of the curve and give my students creative, to-the-point ways to approach the test (and, furthermore, any intimidating standardized test). This aside, I encourage my students to think critically about the test and yet to not overthink what the test requires of them. Toeing this line is difficult but rewarding. Luckily, the SAT is quite repetitive in what it tests, and after students become familiar with the right way to approach problems, they begin to see and understand these patterns.

The new SAT essay is very similar, foundationally, to the rhetorical analysis essay in the AP Language and Composition exam. As I am well-versed in rhetorical constructs and fully appreciate their relevance to informed thinking, the SAT essay is a joy to teach.

I am an extremely effective writing coach, providing fantastic encouragement, structure, and support. I regularly guide my students in the process of writing their own perfect papers until they have mastered the process. I will say this: there is truly NOTHING in the world like the feeling of gratification, happiness, and excitement I get when I, time and time again, pinpoint what needs to be done with an essay and help my student make it happen. Nothing in the world. Teaching writing skills and coaching my students in the writing process is truly my calling, and it brings me great fulfillment; because of this, I am sustained and highly effective in my work with all writing students, regardless of age and circumstance. I have edited and/or assisted with every kind of writing there is, whether academic or creative.

Violin

I have played violin for 16 years. I most recently have been the fiddle player for an established punk rock band, and I have loads of performance experience in a variety of venues; I have been in countless orchestras, chamber groups, quartets, bands, and rock/cover music groups of various genres. I have played internationally as well as in many places on the east coast. I have been a violin teacher at Yamaha Music the past year as well. I have had at least 15 private violin and viola students over the past 2 years and in different states. I have worked with children of all ages and with adults at a variety of different levels--some are just beginning to learn and some are proficient. I most enjoy working with the beginners because I introduce them to my system of learning violin and give them the encouragement (and high energy) needed to stick it out through the frustration of beginning to learn any difficult instrument! I have very high expectations for my students, and practice is one of their cornerstones. My goal with my violin teaching is to always inspire and teach others to feel the profound joy in and of music.

College/Grad School Application Essays: These essays are NOT like ANY kind of writing students usually do in school, and most of the time students are going about their college essays the wrong way. I am extremely skilled at not only helping a student create the kind of essay colleges are looking for, but also doing it in such a way as to draw out the student's unique voice, which is really what schools are hoping to see. I'm very different from a typical college counselor who may know what colleges are looking for in an admissions essay. First of all, since working with students on essays--as well as editing--is my full-time profession, I have many writing-specific skills at my disposal that counselors do not. Secondly, as a writer with a rich literary background myself, I can help a student create not only an emotionally impacting, true-to-self piece of art, but also one that incorporates quite impressive, elevated metaphorical content. Thirdly, I endlessly impress myself with my own editing skills; I am very adept at blending snippets of a story into a delicious, resonant work of art. Lastly, I am extremely skilled at connecting with my students, and because of our amazing rapport, they share things they would rarely share with college counselors. These topics are often the most important topics to write essays about. I can't count the number of times my students will tell me that their college counselors did not listen to them or even try to get to know them. My students are so comfortable with me that we both discover worlds of information, making our essays rich, vibrant, and totally genuine. I have an almost unreal level of success assisting students with college essays that accomplish a very difficult task in the application process. I am also adept at simplifying the SAT and ACT and ensuring success with college applications. Please see my testimonials for much more on this topic.
Writing

Writing

Test Preparation

College Counseling,

College Counseling

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I continually expose myself to lesser-known aspects of the test--an effort that requires continuous personal research and discussion with colleagues in an effort to stay ahead of the curve and give my students creative, to-the-point ways to approach the test (and, furthermore, any intimidating standardized test). This aside, I encourage my students to think critically about the test and yet to not overthink what the test requires of them. Toeing this line is difficult but rewarding. Luckily, the SAT is quite repetitive in what it tests, and after students become familiar with the right way to approach problems, they begin to see and understand these patterns.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

The new SAT essay is very similar, foundationally, to the rhetorical analysis essay in the AP Language and Composition exam. As I am well-versed in rhetorical constructs and fully appreciate their relevance to informed thinking, the SAT essay is a joy to teach.

professional, strategic, caring tutor

Besides being so professional, efficient and strategic, Phoebe teaches kids with her passion and heart! You can easily find a good reading/writing tutor, but you can hardly find such a great one! She helped my 6 year old son falling in love with reading and could not stop! She also had different ways to inspire him to do creative writing. We can’t be grateful and thankful enough to have her! ************************************************ Phoebe, thank you for the lesson today! Chris really loved it! I just want to share that, at the beginning of the writing class, he only could sit there for at most 10 mins to read picture books, and always hesitated to try any books with more words and less pictures. I did not know what to do to help him😭. During these few writing lessons with you, Chris started to sit longer, and had much much more interested in reading, and willing to read more difficult ones. When he began to read the first magic tree house book about the Ninja Last Friday, he could only sit there to finish one or two chapters at a time, and did not want to go on. However, after a week’s time, he could sit there and finish the second book of Titanic all at once without stop. I was so surprised and could not believe it. And I tested some questions about the book and he answered all correctly. It was amazing! I really appreciated your help and inspirations to him! And I so loved your inspirations about his first “book” - IN NEW YORK🤩😃. Now he can just sit down anytime calmly and read books, or even write something!! Thank you so much, Phoebe!

Best Tutor Ever!

Phoebe helped me with my grad school application essays, and I am so glad that I reached out to her in the first place! She is amazingly professional, efficient, patient, responsible, and accessible with a very bright personality! I have applied to 11 different programs, all of them being very competitive, and she worked with me to put together all the essays from scratch. And now I have been admitted to most of the schools!!! Honestly, I had no idea of what to write about in my SoPs when I first came to her. However, Phoebe immediately knew how to guide me, and she always pushes me to think creatively so I was able to produce quality contents. Since I am not a native speaker, I often find myself struggling to write and expand on a topic, especially when it comes to something like a personal statement. Phoebe would break each writing piece into steps and leave me very detailed instructions, which helped me greatly. I think her guidance really helped me formulate my thoughts as well as think outside of the box, and as a result, I was able to gradually realize what I would like to express through my essays, and Phoebe then helped me put pieces together to a coherent and compelling story. I would have been so lost without her guidance! I can feel that Phoebe really cares about her students. She is always prepared for sessions and is super efficient and organized. She would go through my writing before each class so that we could immediately start working when our session starts, and she would leave very detailed lesson summary and homework after each class, which helped me stay on track. She is also highly productive, whether it is a in-person meeting or a remote one, and her editing skill is superb and the results are always flawless! And she is very understanding, she always does her best to accommodate my schedule and need. I enjoyed very much working with her, and I am really thankful for her help throughout the application process! Phoebe is the best tutor you would ever meet! I would recommend her to anyone who needs help with writing!

Thorough, patient, prepared and invested

Phoebe is incredible! I wish we had found her sooner! She is giving my daughter the much needed skills in writing and analysis that she was not getting from her public school (albeit a good one too!). She is a difference maker and my daughter loves her and feels more and more confident in her abilities after each session! Can’t say enough. 10 stars if that was an option!

Best tutor I ever had

Sorry for this very last review. Phoebe is the best tutor I ever had, she is amazing, extremely helpful, brilliant and inspiring. She helped me with my College application essay. I applied for seven grad colleges, two of them are among Ivy. I still can't believe I was admitted to all of them! Thanks so much to my great tutor Phoebe! She is very efficient, detail-oriented and motivating. She boosted my confidence for my application. Before reaching out to Phoebe, I was not confident about my application results, because I was going to transfer my major from engineering to education, which is a huge huge move. Phoebe gave me confidence, and most importantly, she set up a schedule for me to work on essays and gave me detailed and very insightful instructions on every step of the process toward success! She is very good at organizing my experience into a flawless flow of essays. I improved my writing skills a lot by working with her together on my essays. I really really enjoyed the time working with Phoebe. She made everything easier for me by breaking the whole big task (7 essays) down to detailed and scheduled small tasks in a tight timeline. Phoebe is the only person I would trust for college application essays. My friend Linda recommended her to me, and she got into Stanford.I recommended her to my friend, Olivia, we all got admitted into Columbia! Without her I would never get into Columbia University! Thank you so much, Phoebe! Crystal-16 lessons with Phoebe

A truly amazing creative professional

Phoebe is a very well organized, astonishing tutor. Words can’t explain how lucky we felt to find Phoebe. She sparked a new level of creativity in my child. Dealing with senior year has been tough on my daughter, but with Phoebe’s optimistic uplifting nature it encouraged her to persevere with her studies and making quality college essays. The outcome was very rewarding.

There is a Huge Difference between a Good and Great Tutor!

We have two kids, 9 and 11, a boy and girl, who consistently were weakest with their writing skills in school report cards. With Phoebe as their tutor, in just one lesson, they became self-motivated to write and read more. This is an amazing accomplishment. What does self-motivated mean here? Phoebe assigns work for her students--books to read and an assignment to write. Our kids take it upon themselves to read these books and write the assignments. We don't need to remind them to get ready for their weekly meeting with her. There is no "I don't want to do this" from them. Instead, we hear statements like, "I really like this book Phoebe loaned to me" and "Look how many paragraphs I’ve written." And this is a direct result of Phoebe’s unique skills at inspiring her students to write. I didn't think this possible knowing our two children's aversion to writing and their lack of interest in reading due to all the electronic distractions available today. Now, both read without our asking, and write without fear or doubt. Truly wonderful, and well worth the time, energy and money spent.

Helpful and Patient Tutor!

This is an long overdue review for the BEST tutor in the world, Phoebe!!! She helped me to edit my college transfer (2014) and grad school (2017-18) essays and I cannot thank her enough!! I am someone who went to community college and now ends up at Stanford. :) Since English isn't my mother tongue and I am not super gifted in language learning, I was desperately looking for someone to help me with both technical and logic aspect of my personal statements back in 2014. After a quick chat with her, my heart told me that my essays will be in very good hands. :) Phoebe is very honest (with super detailed lesson summary after each session), efficient, patient and easy to communicate! She is very thorough and always make sure I am happy with the essays. Phoebe is the reason I could transfer to UCLA and now studying Education at Stanford!!! I am blessed to find her on wyzant.com. :) She is the only person I can trust for my PS and any editing work in the future!!!

Overcame My Writing Anxiety

Working with Phoebe was nothing but positive and enjoyable. I really wish I had met Phoebe earlier in my career as I struggled with writing for a long time. She worked with me very intensely to determine my challenges with writing and continuously worked to tailor our sessions to address them. Aside from lacking in strategies and skills, I also lacked the confidence and patience in myself due to my perfectionist tendencies. Phoebe helped me overcome those personal challenges by being patient and allowing me to express my personal feelings and distress without feeling judged. I also appreciated her honesty when reviewing my work, being critical when she thought something would be improved and supportive when I unfairly scrutinized my own writing. Throughout our time working together, she was entirely supportive and encouraging, allowing me to improve my writing abilities and self-confidence. I can say without a doubt that I would not have been able to complete my writing goals without Phoebe’s help. By the end of my time working with her, I had found a new sense of accomplishment and growth in my writing that didn’t think possible before. Writing is now much less stressful and even enjoyable to me. I would highly recommend Phoebe to anyone who is struggling with writing. She is an absolutely amazing writing coach and I look forward to working with her again in the future.
