I have over five years of experience tutoring at the community college level, specifically working in the Los Angeles Community College District. What makes me a good tutor, is that I believe everybody can learn. I have worked with traditional students and non-traditional students. I understand that every individual learns things differently; some are visual learners, meaning they need to see the problem. Others are audio learners in which hearing an explanation of how to solve the problem stimulates their learning process. Then there are still others whose learning style encompasses both of these techniques, these students learn by hearing and seeing the process. Knowing and understanding these learning styles are the tools I use to help my students understand the material be presented. Additionally my tutoring sessions are not based on a hierarchy, meaning my session are not the traditional teacher/student structure, I am more of a trainer and the student plays a roll in this training. Lastly I believe people remember more details of an event they enjoyed, and this is what I promote, fun in learning. With me as you tutor I will make you most hated subject fun.
I have completed and tutor math courses up to the level of Statistics. Additionally I have worked as a Supplemental Instructor (SI) at Los Angeles Southwest College in both an beginning and elementary algebra classes during the past five years. As an SI I have had the opportunities to teach students using non tradition methods, meaning if the student does fully understand the definition of the terminology used to explain the problem I use alternation wording to present the same information. In other words I bring math to the level of the students understanding. In addition to using different colors markers to show the students the transitions taking place in the problem solving process of the equations.
Besides completing all the lower division, undergraduate, and graduate courses to receive a Master's in Sociology, I have complete and working knowledge of the concepts related to the discipline of sociology. Additionally I have done research at the undergraduate level, my senior project titled; "Who You Calling Old: Mature Adults Still Enjoying Life on Their Terms" , and a master thesis titled; "Women's Perception of Risk Factors that Influence Girl's to Join Gangs,". The accomplishment of these two projects, my classroom training and working as an research assistant in the sociology department has provided me the skills I need to assist other students working in this discipline.
Overall I consider myself a tutor that finds joy in watching other student achieve there dreams and goals; and the pleasure to say that I played a role in that individual becoming the best they can be. I LOVE WHAT I DO, and if you love what you do you enjoy doing it.... In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
