About Paul

Bio

I spent more than 30 years working in the film industry, mostly with my own company. During that time I have been asked to speak about film/digital production to a number of groups including at American University and the AFI (American Film Institute) as well as organized groups interested in film. I enjoyed it so much that I decided that upon my retirement I would like to teach. Well, that time has come.

About Me

My background includes work as an art director in advertising and a five-year stint in television news.

I then moved on to documentaries where my work was recognized with Academy Award and Emmy nominations. Soon television commercials became our bread and butter with some entertainment projects mixed in. I co-wrote, directed and edited the feature film, "Crosscut" and directed an episode of the television series “Sliders”. “Crosscut" was selected for competition at the Hampton’s Film Festival.

Teaching Style

My students will learn by doing. Each lesson will consist of some instructions including writing and prep and then we go out and shoot some footage. We will then critique the footage and do a preliminary edit. With each of these short storytelling videos the student will learn how the process is done and will improve with each project.

Students can learn any and all of the following topics:

Basic writing and script formatting
Pre=production script breakdown
Lighting
Camerawork
Basic editing

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success as a filmmaker.
