About Michael

I have over a decade of experience teaching and tutoring hundreds of students in mathematics, piano, and music theory. While this mostly includes private teaching, I worked as an instructor at Mathnasium in Temecula for a year and have given guest classes in the Palm Springs Unified School District on music-related subjects. I have experience with students of all ages and levels, from beginner to college-level, and also includes some with learning disabilities. I am currently in college as a math major, with the aim of becoming a professional mathematician. I recently had the privilege of writing a lesson for TedEd on group theory and its application within music. I have given lecture-recitals for the Steinway society and Palm Springs Unified School District on both musical and mathematical subjects.

The subjects I specialize in include piano, music theory, and all levels of math up to and including AP Calculus. In addition to these, I can assist in preparing for SAT, ACT, and other exams.

I approach these subjects similar to learning a language. Rather than memorizing formulae, I attempt to help my students understand the underlying logic behind music and math. I provide supplementary exercises and assignments, and also give regular feedback regarding my students' progress via email.

My availability is Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm, and occasionally weekends if a student has unique circumstances. My starting fee is $50/hr, not including any supplemental materials needed. I am also available to instruct over the internet and charge $30/hr.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you meet your educational goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music Theory

I studied theory, counterpoint, and composition with Dr. Felix Chang of Azusa Pacific University and have composed hundreds of works, many of which have been published and performed publicly.

Piano

I studied with professor Robert Hennekes and Dr. Tao Chang of Azusa Pacific University in piano and theory/composition. I have performed publicly for 12 years and have had a number of compositions published and performed.
