In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a multiple subject credential and have taught all grades ranging from kindergarten through 6th grade, and I have taught in a wide range of academic levels, including Gifted And Talented Education and struggling readers. I am knowledgeable in the curriculum for elementary school subjects, which include Language Arts, Mathematics, science, and social studies, and I know the grade level standards and expectation levels. I am motivated to work closely with struggling students or students who are looking to strengthen and advance their academic skills.
I have passed the RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment). I have attended 7 week long Open Court conferences. Open Court is a reading program that places a strong emphasis on phonics. I have taught ELA for struggling readers for multiple years and held positions as an RSP teacher.
I have a level II special education credential in mild/moderate disabilities, and I also have an autism certification. I have taught special education in multiple settings, including RSP and SDC classes in elementary, middle school, and high school settings. Also, as a mother of a child with special educational needs, I realize the importance of proper and sound instruction from a highly qualified individual.
I am skilled at providing students with strategies to help in note taking, in studying for exams and exam preparation, and in developing methods to organize study materials. I work with high school freshman to gain a firm grasp of organizing assignments, tracking missing work, communicating with their respective teachers to seek needed assistance in the specific class, and teach note taking to gain success in learning the curriculum for exams and completing assignments. I apply strategic methods to help students overcome hindrances that may be impeding their opportunities for success.
