About Ron

Reading has to be fun as well as relevant to the student, or progress, if there is any, will be slow and painful. I've had excellent results teaching reading and English literature in regular education and special education classrooms in Los Angeles and Orange Counties California. The first things are to find out where the student's interests lie, what level that student is comfortable with, and then build a learning strategy that will give the most benefit in the shortest amount of time.

Prior to teaching, I was a writer/editor for a daily newspaper and later as a technical writer in aerospace. I received a bachelor's degree in Engsish and creative writing from California State University Long Beach. My English second subject teaching certificate courses were accomplished at California State University Dominguez Hills as well as special education certificate courses at the same university. My specialty is in teaching reading to academically resistant students.

For many years, I have successfully taught reading, language skills, study skills, and English literature to learning handicapped, severely handicapped, regular education students, and adults. I am currently tutoring ESL adults.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I earned a Professional Clear Special Education Credential for California in 1993 and worked as a Special Education teacher. My teaching activities was primarily with ADD/ADHD students for 10 years in public elementary and middle schools. I enjoyed working with this group of students and had great success in teaching reading and study skills.

Aspergers

I earned a Professional Clear Special Education Credential for California in 1993 and worked as a Special Education teacher for some time. I worked with Aspergers diagnosed students as part of my special day class in elementary and middle school. My greatest success was in teaching reading to this group.

Computer Science

I have been involved with computer technology since 1986 when I assembled my first PC. When I began teaching, my special ed. classroom needed a computer lab and I put an excellent one together with previously junked parts. For many years I have consulted with friends and acquaintances on day to day PC problems. I ran an advanced computer networking school for several years. For over a year I was a volunteer computer coach at Huntington Beach Central Library, a job that involved teaching computer technology and doing desktop support.

Elementary (K-6th)

I first earned a second subject teaching credential in English then went on to earn a K-12 Special Education teaching certificate. I taught all subjects in elementary special day class. My greatest achievements was in teaching reading and basic math to learning disabled elementary school students.

English

I have taught Shakespeare many times, particularly "Romeo and Juliet" and "Julius Caesar." I have a great deal of enthusiasm for the subject and can communicate that enthusiasm to my students.

ESL/ESOL

My specialty is making the learning experience a pleasure. Rapid success is part of that. A student becomes more engaged the more successful she is.

Microsoft Windows

I have been involved with Microsoft Windows since 1986. When I began teaching, my special ed. classroom needed a computer lab, and I put one together using Microsoft Windows 3.11 and an early version of MS Office. For many years I have consulted with friends and acquaintances on, among other things, the various iterations of Microsoft Windows and MS Office. I ran a advanced computer networking school that used Microsoft software products extensively. For over a year I was a volunteer computer coach at Huntington Beach Central Library, a job that involved teaching computer Microsoft Windows and MS Office.

Social Studies

I took two social studies focused teaching classes at CSULB and CSUDH. In addition, I taught social studies to 7th and 8th graders in middle school and followed the LAUSD curriculum.

It is a subject that I have continued to study through a careful reading current periodicals and by reading appropriately oriented literature.

Special Needs

I earned a Professional Clear Special Education Credential for California in 1993 and worked as a Special Education teacher. My teaching activities was primarily with special need students in public elementary and middle schools. I enjoyed working with this group of students and had great success in teaching reading and study skills.

Study Skills

I earned a Professional Clear Special Education Credential for California in 1993 and worked as a Special Education teacher for some time. Study skills training was always a part of my classroom work. My teaching activities were primarily with special needs students in public elementary and middle schools and later to a general population in adult vocational schools. I enjoyed teaching study skills and had great success teaching these skills to special education students and later to adults.
