I have more than 15 years of experience in tutoring students of all ages and levels of education from elementary to graduate school. I am most interested in changing the way my students perceive themselves when approaching math. Throughout the years, I have had the most rewarding experience when my students, besides turning their grades around, feel empowered to the point they become a math resource to their classmates. I take my classes very personally and work together with parents to identify my students' areas of weakness. I am a strong believer that by bringing a holistic approach to tutoring, tutors are successful in changing students' views of life in the most important aspects, preparing them to face the future with more confidence. This is my approach.
To me every student is smart. If there is a difficulty, it is because the fundamentals were not learned properly. Math is like a set of building blocks. No new concept is totally independent, rather it is an extension of a previous one. Students shouldn’t simply memorize formulas, they should understand where formulas are coming from. In this process, the brain gets trained for future problem solving situations. When I work with Freshman and Sophomore students, I am conscious that I am actually preparing them for the SAT and other admission tests earlier than in their Junior year.
In terms of subjects, my expertise is in all standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE as well Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, Physics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Business Calculus, and Spanish. As I instill my methodology to my students' study habits, they find themselves able to develop concentration skills to a level of solving the problems without writing.
Spanish skills: Being a native of Peru, South America, my command of the Spanish language is impeccable. This is because not only am I native but I have always paid special attention to learning the correct grammar, vocabulary and spelling, excelling at all touching points where Spanish is used. I make learning Spanish a fun experience by connecting with my students in an effective way after evaluating their needs.
My credentials include a degree in Civil Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and an MBA degree from University of Southern California (USC Marshall School of Business). I started tutoring when I was 15. My students have stayed in touch after more than 20 years, with most of them now successful professionals in various technical fields such as Engineering. My resume comprises my career accomplishments as International Marketing Director for a software company in the US, which provides me with strong analytic skills in order to approach my students' individual situation and craft the most effective plan of study that will help them reach levels of performance they didn't think capable of. This is my best reward. As teaching is one of my strongest passions, I would be delighted to make a difference in my students' professional careers. I enjoy teaching as much as I enjoy my Yoga practice, which is one of my hobbies. I have more than 15 years of experience in tutoring students of all ages and levels of education from elementary to graduate school. I am most interested in changing the way my students perceive themselves when approaching math. Throughout the years, I have had the most rewarding experience when my students, besides turning their grades around,

Elena has really helped me accomplish a greater understanding of Math topics, especially in our SAT practice sessions. She refers to that practice as "critical thinking", which I now know is very important to grasp when learning about difficult subjects. She uses different exceptional approaches to connect with me as a student: targeting my strengths and weaknesses, creating a flow plan for my development, and adjusting to my pace. I'll solve a problem while she is watching me and then we will review the most practical way to actually go around the problem while also managing time wisely. Elena has really helped me with time management for my upcoming standardized tests by giving tips and smart ways to remember basic concepts, and she is an excellent tutor for SAT and math topics in general. We are able to engage during our lessons even when they run long, and accommodate to a good teaching/learning pace for me. Elena approaches book problems in ways that outsmart the explanations in the answer sections. That's how I know she is an invaluable teacher- she brings outside knowledge from her engineering career to teach me strategies not found in books or online. I see myself learning more from her in the future, whether it be for school classes or SAT/ACT. My family and I looked for a tutor with previous experience for weeks, and I tried sitting with several tutors before finding Elena. I believe any students who appreciate a kind teacher with professional knowledge and background experience will find an excellent fit with her too.
I have previously taken the Kaplan Test Prep course and did not do well on my first attempt at the GMAT. When I decided to go back to studying I felt I needed guidance in specific areas. Knowing math was my weakest subject, I reached out to Elena for help on the Quantitative GMAT section. Elena is very helpful as she has exceptional math skills and has taken the GMAT test. It is valuable to receive guidance from someone who knows the format and timing of the GMAT. In particular, Elena patiently teaches strategies that can be applied to multiple problems. Since I have began working with her I have made an improvement and am even doing some math in my head! Scheduling is easy and she is always on time and prepared for our sessions. While I am still meeting with Elena, I am already more confident with solving math problems on the GMAT.
Elena is helping prepare for the GMAT exam. She is incredibly bright and disciplined in her approach. If you are looking for someone to help you improve your understanding around the quantitative section, she is for you!
Elena has taught me the basic principles of Calculus for Business. I have a math deficiency and already failed Calculus once. She has helped me understand concepts so that I can independently work problems and succeed. I have received high B's on every Calculus exam this semester only because of her ability to help me master the material. She reviews my homework with me and keeps me on track. I would not be able to master this material without her help. I highly recommend Elena for any student who struggles with math.
I have been studying with Elena for the last three weeks, covering material in both my senior level Spanish Linguistics course, as well as Advanced Spanish Grammar and Composition. She has helped me tremendously in both courses, and I am very impressed with her subject mastery.
Both my wife and I are taking lessons with her and come back and say how on it she is with her lesson plans and energy throughout the lesson. Highly highly recommended her.
For several years I had hoped I could begin an MBA program. However it is important to me that I am accepted into an esteemed one rather than just any.
And although I have a high undergraduate GPA, the task of scoring well on the GMAT daunted me. I easily get nervous during tests and typically do not do well on the any type of standardized testing. I knew I would have to invest in some test prep. Yet, still on a tight budget, I attempted self study with different guides.
I spent about a year and a half lackadaisically trying to study and inadvertently keeping my hopes a pipe dream.
I found Elena through Wyzant when I thought enough was enough.
I have completed classroom test prep for other tests and I know that my time with Elena has been much more useful to me. She easily identifies the areas in which I struggle and as such has created a program specifically catered to me. She keeps my learning process organized and keeps me accountable for my progress. In hindsight, I should have invested in my time with her as my tutor rather than all those study guides and self study test prep courses.
In less than two months studying under Elena, tackling the GMAT has become infinitely less daunting. She trains me as if I am a marathon runner getting ready for the race, and the more I accomplish with her, the more prepared I will feel and be when test day comes. I have a newfound confidence in my abilities and now have a thorough understanding of what to expect on the day of the actual test.
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback on what I call "engineering critical thinking" Your newly gained confidence is indeed a result of a two-way effort. Your commitment and high interest in learning through my methodology are two of the most important elements in this test training. It is a pleasure to help you succeed on your next career phase. I know you will be successful.
Elena has been a big help with my son because she has taken an extra step in her tutoring. Not only does she teach him how to do a specific problem, but she also takes the added step of making sure that my son is able to understand how to solve problems on his own. This has raised his level of understanding.
Elena has completely changed the way that I am approaching GMAT Quant questions. She has helped me integrate strategy, thoughtfulness, and has a real hands on approach to learning. If you are looking for someone who isn't just going to run through questions, but actually help you figure out where you went wrong, how to increase your speed, and ensure you understand the material then you MUST hire Elena.
Elena has been a huge help to my daughter for her statistics class, not only is she beginning to understand it but she's building her confidence. Would highly recommend.
Your daughter is a bright student. It is a pleasure to work with her! Also, she has a great personality. Thanks!
Elena has been easy to communicate with prior to our first meeting. She was on time and focused to teach my daughter as much as she could for the time we had reserved. My daughter walked away feeling relieved and clear about the material they went over. We plan to continue with the tutoring.
My meetings with your daughter have been very productive as she is a student who is eager to learn absorbing everything that is explained to her. Smart student and such a nice girl!
Elena is so great at explaining each concept and really helps me understand the context and steps of each problem. We went over linear equations and the equations associated with scatterplots.
It is such a delight to meet with you every week Hannah! You are so committed to learn and diligent in attending your lessons. Thank you!
Elena exceeded all of my expectations as a tutor. She is extremely generous with her time, wants to see her students succeed and comes prepared with a plan to help you achieve your goals. After a 60-minute assessment with Elena, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. Then, she meticulously crafted an effective strategy to maximize my time as I feverishly prepared for the GMAT. Also, she goes above and beyond by giving problems to review when you're away from the classroom. I have hired four different tutors since registering with WyzAnt. Elena was, by far, the most prepared, patient and diligent. I extremely recommend Elena for anyone wanting to take the biggest strides in the shortest amount of time.
Great first lesson, wasn't rushed which was perfect. Went through things I didn't know and after I had it down.
Elena has been nothing short of spectacular with teaching our 16 year old son to speak Spanish. Her easy, encouraging teaching style resonates with our son to give him the confidence and excitement to speak Spanish
Thanks very much Don. It is a pleasure to work with Cameron. He is so eager to learn and relates very easily to my teaching style!
Elena was a great tutor! I was struggling in my UCLA Extension Program business statistics course after my midterm and Elena was able to give me so much clarity on what my teacher was asking. I needed this class as a pre-req for acceptance into the MBA program at UCLA and with her help I was able to receive an "A-". I will definitely be reaching out to her again if I start to struggle in another math course.
Working with Andre was such a rewarding experience in that we accomplished what he needed in such a short period of time considering that Statistics is a subject not so easy to comprehend. I am so glad he got what he needed for UCLA Anderson School of Management!
She is very knowledgeable about statistics. She was able to accommodate seeing me on a short notice. I would highly recommend Elena.
Elena does a great job of making my son feel at ease. After having a tough time with a previous math teacher at school my son started feeling test anxiety in math classes. With Elena's wonderful patient way of working with him he is regaining his confidence in math and getting A's.
Kyle was a wonderful student to work with this past school year. He paid attention to all I taught him and understood the subject and my approach to Math very easily. I look forward to work with him this fall!
Elena is very knowledgable about calculus and really understands the importance of cementing the basics and explaining ideas in new ways with a very open perspective.
Elena and I reviewed transnational motion for my Dynamics course. She is very knowledgeable and patient. She was great to work with.
I highly recommend Elena for tutoring. I am in college and had to take a physics class online. I had a difficult time trying to understand the subject and finally had to turn to tutoring. Elena actually taught the subject to me. She was very patient and made sure I understood what she going over before teaching me another concept. She always worked around my crazy schedule. I would never have passed the class without her.
Carissa, you were one of my best students in Florida. Very intelligent, committed and focused student!
Elena helped me through Statistics. Her intuition to my style of learning was awesome, it relaxed me and assisted me in math. Elena, you are truly a professional and committed instructor. See you next semester.
When I was in desperate need of help to review for my Ap Physics 1 ap exam, I was able to quickly contact Elena and set up a couple appointments. At an affordable price, Elena was able to coach me into understanding all of my problems with physics and find new ways to solve each problem. This proved to be very beneficial because her exploratory skills are superb and ultimately enhanced my physics abilities and test taking strategies, proving successful when I took the ap exam.
My son had some make up quizzes for pre-calculus and was totally lost. He had to pass these quizzes or his college admission to FSU would be voided as he was in danger of getting a D in the class. I found Elena on this site and much to my relief she was able to meet with him on very short notice. She was knowledgeable, patient, and interested in helping him.
He did well enough to pass the class and soon will be off to college!
Elena helped my daughter for her 1st year in college classes for math. For me she has been so easy to reach and always available to talk to when needed. I observed the first class, she knows her material, is patient, and on time. My daughter's comments about her is that she really cares she said that she even watches her face expression and keeps asking if you understand! She knows her material very well. Many people are good in math but few can teach it well and reach our youths mind and heart and give them the confidence that they can do it on their own. My daughter was getting a C in the class before Elena was helping her. After the classes she was able to get 98% on her final and ended up with A in the class. I am truly appreciative and thankful for finding her.
I found Elena on WyzAnt three weeks before my daughter was to take the SAT. She needed to raise her math score 60 points to qualify for the scholarship she wanted, and math is not her strong subject. Elena was very encouraging, patient and taught her the strategies necessary to do well on the test. My daughter raised her score 60 points with only three weeks preparation - thanks to Elena! I highly recommend Elena as a tutor.
Elena has been a wonderful tutor. She made Math the most easiest subject in no time and no stress. After years from being away from college, I can master Math with no fear. She has a very unique way in teaching with different strategies. She makes Math fun and simple. I have been taking several classes and she didn't only helped on solving the problems but in thinking in a smart way. She has wide range of knowledge in other subjects too and helped me understanding physic and some statistics.
I am going to have her help on statistics too. I have tried several tutors and it was wast of time and money. I definitely recommend her for my daughter and for every one looking for good investment in exam preparation. She was my only savior and I wish her all of success in her life.
Very individualistic approach. Seemed interested to teach and happy. Would happily schedule with Elena again and would definitely recommend (especially if you are western Broward County)!
Elena helped my daughter get through a very difficult time in her studies. Her approach was customized to my daughter's needs and specific situation.
Having dealt with tutors before, most have a set way to teach. Elena takes the time to evaluate her student while teaching and, in a short time, knows what will work with that individual at that time.
Elena made it interesting, fun, and informative. If we ever need a tutor again, she will always be our first choice.
Originally my daughter needed help with physics. Since she has been tutored by Elena, her grade in physics has gone up from a B to an A+. Whenever my daughter needs help in another subject such as calculus, Elena is both willing and prepared to teach. Finally, Elena is not only tutoring my daughter to do well in school but also is teaching her to tackle problems in standardized tests.
Elena is very patient. She enjoys her job and makes the material easy to understand. I 100% recommended her; you won't regret it!
Working with Elena was an absolute pleasure. I came across her profile on WyzAnt and from my first session with her I knew she would be an instrumental person in my GMAT preparation. Having taken the GMAT herself, Elena truly understood my needs. She was able to explain complicated math concepts in simple ways I could easily understand and apply. She was very patient and generous with her time. Taking the GMAT is stressful, and Elena was able to make studying for this exam a lot more pleasant. I highly recommend Elena, and if I ever need tutoring in additional subjects I will undoubtedly contact her again.
Elena is an excellent tutor. She helped my daughter get from a C to an A in pre-calculus within one semester. She is always accessible and willing to help. She is kind, patient and easy to understand. I believe it takes more than proficiency to be a great math tutor, it takes care and concern for the students success and Elena has all those qualities and more.
Elena has been a blessing. Our son was failing every Algebra 2 test but has passed the last two (scores of 72% then a 98%) after starting lessons with Ms. B. She responded to my initial request for assistance very quickly, and has been prompt to the scheduled lessons (at the local library). Ms. B. has been flexible to our need for saturation teaching and has managed her schedule to make sure she is able to provide the time (twice a week). My son was also told that she would be happy to respond to any questions he might have in-between lessons, all he has to do is text her. She is very professional and takes her responsibility seriously.
Extremely disappointed. Was taught via YOUTUBE. could have done this at home. Thankfully WyzAnt has the one hour guarantee and immediately refunded me one hour back to my total payment.
Rachel and you hired me to help with a Modeling and Forecasting exercise. When I arrived and read your assignment instructions, these were clear as to your college professor's requirements that you should do the work on your own. On that moment, I told you that I could help you with specific questions pertaining the process but not in doing the assignment.
I haven't take a math class in over two years, it is my least favorite subject and a source of extreme anxiety for me. That being said Elena has helped me SO much! I'm in a difficult course right now with a professor who is less than extraordinary but Elena has really helped to fill in all of the gaps plus more! She explains things in a simple, concrete manner which makes them easy to understand, and caters to my learning sensibilities well! I got an 80% on my first midterm; that is the HIGHEST grade I have gotten in a math class since maybe the 5th or 6th grade. She is so kind, and has stayed over her paid time with me more than once to make sure I grasp the concepts. It is so comforting to have a tutor who makes me feel like she genuinely wants me to succeed! Thank you Elena!
I have always struggled with math, and most tutors lose their patience with my lack of comprehension in the field. I have to say this has been my BEST experience with a tutor in all my years of school. I struggled to understand Statistics, and felt like I was learning a whole new language. Thanks to Elena I was able to comprehend the material and pass the class at UCLA. The many hours of hard work and dedication on both ends, made the class so much easier and tolerable. Her easy going demeanor helped when trying to reach out to her and ask questions without the feeling of judgment. Hands down best tutor I have worked with!
Elena brings in her expertise from her Engineering and USC MBA background. I'm so glad to have Elena as my daughter's Algebra 2 Honors tutor. She's a patient, great person! She is a well qualified Math tutor with her vast knowledge, patience, and great communication skills to simplify complicated questions to where they are easy to grasp. My daughter's grade improved from B to A. Elena is a good match for my daughter. Thank you Elena. Give her a try and you will be glad!
Elena is a great math tutor. My nephew went from an F in algebra to a B+ in two short weeks. He says he cant believe how easy she makes math seem. His confidence in math has really soared since he started his lesson with her.
Elena is very patient with me. I'm 30+ and headed back to school, re-entering the math world yet again. It's never been my strong point, nor my favorite. It's one of those necessary things though. I knew I needed a tutor prior to class to help refresh my brain on some basic algebra skills and she really helped with that. She got me back up to speed on some of the solid basic concepts needed to get into a Int Algebra class without being too lost! Now that the semester is underway I'm still working with her when I get myself into an area I'm uncomfortable with and need a better explanation on how to do the problems. She'll explain it to you, demonstrate the steps needed to solve the problem, then have you work multiple problems so she can make sure you understand what you're doing. She's a wonderful compliment to a fast paced class where it's hard to catch your breath!
Elena is the 2nd tutor we've used for physics and the results have been marvelous compared to the 1st tutor. The grades earned really tell the story of whether a tutor is effective or not and so far we have no complaints. Elena seems to be accurate in her anticipation of what should be emphasized and not emphasized in preparation for exams. The results of her efforts have been very positive and it shows in the grades earned in the class.
I am very grateful for having students like this, who is not only smart, organized in his thinking processes but also eager to learn!
Elena has tutored my son in Algebra 1 for several months now. He can be easily distracted and Elena has been very patient with him and very good at getting him to focus again. Thanks to Elena he understands his homework better and has shown improvement in his grade. Plus she's a really nice person.
My daughter and I have found Elena to be patient and understanding in explaining the most difficult concepts. Her grade in Physics improved a grade and we are happy with the tutoring experience we have received. She cares about her students and it shows!!
Elena has been a great tutor for my daughter. She is very patient and knowledgeable. My daughter is improving in her math skills and she is now starting with her Spanish sessions as well. Very happy we found Elena, I highly recommend her.
Elena is the sweetest! I contacted her last minute to help me on a collage exam I was not prepared for and she made room for me not only one, but TWO days to ensure I was prepared for my exam! She has a very clear understanding of math and a beautiful way of explaining it that makes math seem easy! I can't wait to continue our tutoring sessions from this point on!
What makes a teacher a good tutor is a great student. Caroline not only is committed to learn but is an intelligent girl who grasp concepts very quickly.
Elena was very knowledgeable and helpful when we were working on my Marketing project. Also, she has a great personality, and it makes it easier to communicate with her. Highly recommend!!!!
My son took his first tutorial lesson with Elena yesterday and he loved it. He said that when he asked questions, Elena could explained them clearly and easy for him to understand. We are very lucky to have Elena as my son's math tutor!
Austin is a smart boy and with such a strong desire to learn new math topics. It was a pleasure to tutor him during his summer vacation. I am looking forward to seeing him again next year!
Elena has been working with my daughter for many months now and I have seen a major improvment in her grades. She takes a personal interest in her success and has a very positive attitude which has had an impact on how my daughter is performing. I recommend her highly.
Barbara's daughter was one my first students here in U.S. and tutoring her was a very rewarding experience. She is not only a sweet girl but also very smart and showed a strong desire to learn in order to change her academic grades which she definitely did!
Elena makes it very easy to understand any subject. The way she goes about teaching and explaining topics is very methodical. She explains things in a way that makes it very easy to comprehend.
For example, in my Spanish class, I was having trouble remembering how to conjugate verb tenses. Elena came up with a step by step process that I can easily remember which made it extremely simple for me to conjugate any verb.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The approach I give to this subject doesn't differ too much with that for other Algebra levels. Making sure students have the fundamentals of Algebra when assessment takes place during first lesson is my major concern. From there on is a matter of building up on new concepts. Building blocks is what Algebra is about.
If the student does not have the fundamentals of Algebra, this is the moment to reinforce concepts before moving on with the Algebra 2 syllabus. Important concepts such as quadratic functions and their applications in real world problems are covered in Algebra 2. Introduction to probabilities and statistics are also covered here. Concepts and Algebra properties learned in Algebra 1 are continuously applied in solving Algebra 2 problems. Algebra 2 is also a gateway to Pre-Calculus which makes this subject an interesting bridge to higher level math subjects.
Calculus is a subject that can be learned very easily. Being that PreCalc is a pre-requisite for Calculus, following our intuition and understanding the geometry and algebra behind the Calculus concepts as well as learning a few properties, makes Calculus a fun subject to learn and apply to real world situations.
Geometry is one of my favorite subjects. I teach my students where formulas come from instead of just drilling them in memorization. Application of Algebra concepts to solve Geometry problems are reviewed.
The GMAT is such an interesting and challenging test. Time is highly restricted and since it is a computer adaptive test, the test taker cannot move on to the next question until an answer has not been submitted. It is a matter of time management and a strategic approach to questions. Math knowledge for the quantitative section, in which I can help, is not expected to be no higher than High School level. Reasoning and logic will help you get to the other side. I successfully completed this test when applying to a top Business School, USC.
As a civil engineer, I have taken various levels of Physics in college. I have helped HS students improve their grades in Physics, but more importantly, I have helped them understand how Physics principles work in real-world situations. Formulas and graph interpretation become familiar and easy to understand in terms of deriving them.
This is probably the most fundamental subject in Math. Students taking Algebra 2 will have to use properties learned in pre-algebra. I enjoy teaching this subject to make sure the basics are well learned. In addition, I have vast experience working with Middle and Elementary School students.
As a building block on Algebra 2, and prior to Calculus, this is an important subject for students who want to pursue a career in a technology or science field. I have vast experience tutoring Algebra 2 not only because I have hundreds of hours with this subject but because of my engineering background.
Taking admission tests requires not only mastering the subject but also the test taking process. Setting a test taking strategy is crucial for success. In a test taking environment in which time is pressuring, being precise and fast at the same time requires training. SAT Math is one of my favorites.
Teaching Spanish requires a methodology as any other subject. I also use correlation with the English language. I have vast experience helping students understand conjugation of verbs as well as the application of Spanish grammar rules. In addition, I am a native Spanish speaker proud of commanding a superior level of proficiency in this language, Castillian, as it is called in South America, where I am originally from.
Statistics can be a puzzle to many students; however, when understood, it becomes fascinating. I have had the rewarding experience of tutoring college students in this subject who have been able to get through the semester with good grades. During my MBA studies, the Statistics courses I took were interesting, as we applied them to real-world situations, having worked on complex projects.
It is from my own student experience in undergrad and grad school that I learned what I teach my students in terms of study skills. Time Management, organization and learning methodologies are essential elements in my tutoring experience. I am a Civil Engineer, a background that helps with mental organization and analytic skills. My MBA studies certainly is recent example of mastering effective study skills!
