About Janice

Assisting students achieve success in school excites me because their feelings of educational accomplishment translate to their overall high self-esteem. I especially enjoy teaching one-on-one because it is such a joy to see a child reach an understanding of an educational concept that previously confused them. It is magical to see their smile and pride show through.

Being a Southern California native, I obtained a degree from UCLA and have 16+ years volunteer and paid experience in education, working with students at such schools as American Martyrs, Grandview, and Mira Costa in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Valley and Hermosa View in Hermosa Beach, as well as several Palos Verdes schools. I am currently employed as an instructional aid, assisting classroom teachers with curriculum implementation, engaging in one-on-one and small group instruction, and nurturing the academic and social growth of students with Individual Educations Plans.

I possess a 30 Day Substitute Teacher Permit and completed CBEST, TB test, and LIveScan results. I am CPR Certified and CalSTAT Classroom Management Trained with units toward my ECE and teaching credential work in progress. I also am certified in the Master Teacher, Inc. Paraeducator Professional Development program.

I have experience tutoring students of all ages in all subjects, so I can act as a general homework helper or concentrate on a specific subject area such as reading, reading comprehension, writing, elementary math, study skills, or test prep.

I hope my passion for teaching is evident. I look forward to speaking with you regarding how I can offer you child the educational support he or she needs.

I have experience with Common Core Math, and I like to teach using games. word problems, logic, and repetition.

My language arts skills range from teaching pre-school letter recognition and phonics with decoding to helping with fluency, comprehension, and making inferences and connections. In writing, I teach grammar, proper sentence structure, sentence variety, brainstorming, essay organization - from thesis statement to conclusion. I have experience with Linda Mood Bell methods.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to offer tutoring for students in elementary school because I have a degree from UCLA, my substitute teaching permit, and am currently employed as an Instructional Aide for the Hermosa Beach City School District. I have 16 years' experience working one to one with students from Pre-K to 8th in all subjects. I am especially skilled in improving reading and writing skills, and I have three years of successful Common Core Math exposure.

Thank you for your consideration.

Homeschool

I am qualified to offer tutoring in a homeschool setting because I have 16 years experience teaching all subjects to individual students in grades Pre-K to 8th. I am especially experienced in customizing and teaching lessons in Reading, Writing, Math, and Social Studies. I have a degree from UCLA and an Emergency Substitute Teaching Certificate. I currently work as an Instructional Aide assisting elementary school children one-to-one and in small group settings. I am also a trained paraprofessional educator.

ISEE

I am qualified to prep students for the ISEE test because I am a UCLA graduate with 16 years experience tutoring elementary and middle school children in all subject areas. My experience in test prep includes prep for the SBAC, OLSAT, and ISEE. I also work as an Instructional Aide in Hermosa Beach, assisting both general ed and special needs children. My approach to test prep utilizes sample questions in verbal and quantitative reasoning, strategies for improved reading comprehension and speed, as well as concentration on Math skills.

Thank you for your consideration.

Phonics

While working as an instruction aide for the HBCSD and a volunteer at American Martyrs elementary school, I have had extensive experience working with pre-readers on decoding written words by associating their letters and vowel patterns with their sounds. I also can help with phonemic awareness, fluency, reading level testing, comprehension, and grammar. I utilize flashcards, word associations, rhyming, puzzles, and songs as tutoring techniques in this area.

Social Studies

I am a graduate of UCLA with a BA degree in History. As an instructional aide, I have 16 years experience assisting elementary school and high school age students in studying Social Studies, helping them with their comprehension of dates as well as general themes, concepts, and patterns of each time period they study. My tutoring utilizes video, photos, textbooks, graphs, multiple choice question prep, as well as the development of writing skills to effectively answer essay questions.
