Assisting students achieve success in school excites me because their feelings of educational accomplishment translate to their overall high self-esteem. I especially enjoy teaching one-on-one because it is such a joy to see a child reach an understanding of an educational concept that previously confused them. It is magical to see their smile and pride show through.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

While working as an instruction aide for the HBCSD and a volunteer at American Martyrs elementary school, I have had extensive experience working with pre-readers on decoding written words by associating their letters and vowel patterns with their sounds. I also can help with phonemic awareness, fluency, reading level testing, comprehension, and grammar. I utilize flashcards, word associations, rhyming, puzzles, and songs as tutoring techniques in this area.
