About Kristin

Teaching is my passion and to me there is no greater reward than helping a child grown and learn. My love for teaching became apparent to me during college when I lived in Italy for a summer to teach English. Since then, I have gone on to receive my Bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders, as well as a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education. I have experience teaching in general education and special education classrooms, ages ranging from 3 to 15, and settings from individual to large group lessons. Over the past year, I have worked as a behavioral instructor, offering one-on-one support to children with developmental disabilities and delays. I have also been working as a tutor and a lead teacher in a preschool classroom. My previous experience includes teaching in a self-contained K-2 Autism class, teaching in an inclusive preschool classroom, substitute teaching/tutoring at a summer intensive program for special needs, and serving as a counselor/English tutor in Italy. In addition, I have spent ample time tutoring many of the children I have nannied for over the past 10 years. This includes everything from math and English help to working on fine motor, gross motor, language, and self help skills.
I have moved to the Hermosa Beach area from Washington, DC after graduating with my Master's from George Washington University. I have flexible hours to offer help in various subject areas and am willing to travel to meet your needs and tutor in your home!

I'm experienced in putting together lesson plans based on Common Core State Standards. I hold a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education
and a Teaching Certificate in Early Childhood Special Education.

Please contact me if you would like to know more about me and my experience teaching and/or to schedule lessons!! I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have experience teaching/tutoring at a summer intensive program for special needs in which one of my classrooms was dedicated to working with several young students with ADD/ADHD. I assisted in this classroom daily, as well as substitute taught when needed. In addition, I have received my Master's in Early Childhood Special Education where I became extremely familiar and knowledgable about many disorders, including ADD/ADHD.

Aspergers

My Master's program was very ASD oriented, preparing me to work with a variety of disorders and disabilities, while specifically focusing on Autism. My student teaching experience included a 375-hour internship in a self-contained K-2 Autism classroom. Here I was exposed to the many ways ASD can manifest, and I became skilled in teaching and behavior management strategies relating to ASD.

Autism

In addition to holding a Master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education, I spent a semester serving as a co-teacher in a self-contained K-2 Autism Classroom for my internship credits. I worked with 8 boys to foster communication, social, and academic skills. I am well versed in behavior management strategies and functional communication training. I also created and worked to meet IEP goals.

Elementary (K-6th)

My Master's degree as well as my teaching experience qualify me to tutor in the Elementary subject area. Through George Washington University, I received an MA in Early Childhood Special Education; this program also prepares its students to work in general education settings. My elementary teaching experience includes working in a K-2 Autism classroom, serving as a teacher's aide/substitute teacher in an elementary summer intensive tutoring program, and teaching elementary aged children in Italy.

Reading

In addition to holding my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Special Education, I have experience working in many elementary classrooms, as well as working individually with children who need extra help in certain subject areas. Through my Master's program, I took a specialized class on reading instruction where I was taught in depth about the reading acquisition process and strategies to help those with difficulties in this complex process. I have created numerous lesson plans, worked with young children who have reading disabilities, and have been exposed to a number of strategies and programs to help remediate a reading deficit.

Special Needs

My Master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education has qualified me to tutor in this specific subject. I have completed ample hours of student teaching in special needs classrooms; I have also worked with children with special needs outside my program in a more one-on-one manner. Much of my teaching experience throughout the last several years centers around children with special needs. My master's program has instilled in me much knowledge about Special Education, from the disorders themselves to teaching strategies that will best help these unique children succeed.

Patient and helpful

Kristin made my son feel comfortable. He had the patience to stay with her and play reading games. He also practiced his sight words in sentences.
