About Erin

I have been teaching and tutoring for 10 years. While I like being in the classroom, I really prefer the one-on-one or small group environment. I have taught French, English, AP prep, and SAT/ACT/CAHSEE prep. Writing is my favorite subject to tutor and I think it is such a crucial form of expression.

I lived and studied abroad in France, and have traveled to more than 27 countries around the world.

I have taught 9th- and 10th-grade English; SAT prep; and tutored students in ESL, reading and writing for all age students and adults.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have experience as a K-12 Reading/Writing tutor and French teacher. I regularly tutor ACT prep and have designed a method to help students score at least a 28.

College Counseling

I currently teach an SAT/AP prep course to 30 high school seniors at the high school where I work. I also teach a college prep course to 9th graders which includes a college application and financial aid piece. At my previous school, I was the 11th grade team lead in charge of SAT prep, and taught an advisory course to all levels 9-12 to prepare and counsel them on college decisions.

I have 9 years experience working at college-preparatory charter high schools which prepare all students to attend 4-year universities. Previous students of my have graduated from schools such as UCLA, Cal Berkeley, Penn, and Princeton.

Elementary (K-6th)

While my teaching credential is for grades 6-12, I regularly tutor elementary school students to help with homework, particularly reading and math. My Master's degree is in Language Arts and Reading, so my coursework was with primarily elementary school teachers learning how to teach kids to read and write. I believe this informs my work as a Foreign Language teacher, but also allows me to understand the needs of younger students. Having six younger brothers and sisters probably also adds to my comfortability with tutoring younger students.

Elementary Math

I tutor several clients, elementary to high school. While I like being in the classroom, I really prefer the one-on-one or small group environment. I have taught French, English, AP prep, and SAT/ACT/CAHSEE prep.

English

I have taught English for grades 9 and 10 and have tutored both struggling students and students preparing for the AP English exam.

I have designed high school English assessments and worked on projects preparing for the ELA Common Core Assessments.

ESL/ESOL

Ten years experience teaching and tutoring English and ESL. I have experience with 9th grade ELD, and have worked with RFEP and EL learners for 9+ years. I also have tutored elementary to adult learners of English to work on both speaking, writing, and practicing for interviews.

Flute

I played the flute for 5 years. I was in both marching and concert band. I have a strong background in music and sight reading.

French

I am a High School French teacher levels 1-AP. I am also a SAT prep instructor and writing tutor. I have a Master's and Doctorate Degree in Education.

Grammar

Grammar is one of my areas of expertise, teaching both English and French. I also have high verbal and writing skills, as well as an MA and doctorate in education.

SAT Reading

MA in reading and four years experience teaching SAT prep.

SAT Writing

I worked for an SAT prep for three years as a lead instructor, program coordinator, and independent consultant/curriculum developer. My class consistently had the highest growth in scores. I also recently taught a 12th grade SAT prep class in which the majority of my students increased their scores by about 300 points.

Personally, I had a 61 Verbal and 5.5 out of 6 on the GRE writing putting me in the 96th percentile. I regularly proofread essays, personal statements, and have published both a Master's Thesis and a doctoral dissertation. I love writing and consider it my biggest strength.

Study Skills

I have taught and tutored for 10+ years in a variety of subjects. I have worked with struggling students, students with disabilities, and have led several homework help sessions and formal classes including for TCD Kids Foundation I teach a Homework Help, Writing, and Reading classes for the city of Manhattan Beach. I can help motivate students, help them organize, and teach general test-taking and studying skills and strategies.

Knowledgeable, Efficient, and Highly Recommended

Erin is clearly very knowledgeable when it comes to writing. She has given my daughter the tools and confidence she needed to help her really improve her writing skills. My daughter says that she is easy to talk to and is very encouraging! She was afraid of being criticized, as English is not her strong suit, but this was not the case at all. She looks forward to her sessions as the essays have im
