Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Masters of Education degree in English Education from Rockhurst University, and have been certified by the state of Missouri to teach English for grades 9-12. I also have a semester of student-teaching experience teaching 11th grade Honors Literature courses and AP Language/Composition courses. I feel especially qualified and experienced in guiding students through classic and American literature, and coaching students through the writing process of developing academic essays and research papers, though I am also comfortable with helping students write narratives, poetry, and creative nonfiction.

Grammar

As part of my Masters of Education in English Education degree from Rockhurst University, I took classes in the history and structure of the English language which have solidified my grasp of English grammar and syntax. Besides this, I have also taken a number of classes in the grammar of other languages, including Greek, Hebrew, and Spanish, which has deepened my understanding of grammatical, structural, and comparative linguistics. I like to teach grammar not as a separate subject, but as a vital part of reading and writing that maximizes our ability to understand and express our thoughts.

Reading

As part of my Masters of Education in English at Rockhurst University, I took a number of courses on strategies for developing students' reading comprehension, fluency, and interest in classic literature. Furthermore, I completed a semester of student teaching at Park Hill High School, where I taught advanced 11th grade literature courses--guiding students through classic American texts like the Great Gatsby, the Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, etc. I believe it is important to help students develop strategies for comprehension before, during, and after reading.

Religion

My degrees are in religion, after all, from private Christian schools sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene: of which I am a minister. Though I am a member of this evangelical, Protestant denomination, my education and interest extends to the wider world of phenomena (and noumena) associated with "religion"; and I would briefly describe my own worldview as classically Christian, Orthodox, or Catholic.

Writing

As part of my Masters of Education program at Rockhurst University, I took a number of classes aimed at developing secondary students' writing/composition skills--including a class titled: the teaching of writing. I also have a semester of high school student teaching experience teaching AP language/composition. I consider myself to be especially strong at coaching students through the tradition writing and research process involved in academic essays, but also feel comfortable helping students develop creative writing skills.
