About John

Hey!

My name is John, I'm a graduate of St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and, most recently, Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California. I love learning and teaching!

My history with education has been mixed. Before the third grade, I was not able to read due to an undiagnosed eye problem. Luckily, I was seen by a school psychiatrist that noticed my difficulty with, "words flying off the pages," so that by the end of the third grade, after many hours of after-school tutoring, I was reading at a high school level. Unfortunately, I stayed in the public school system and my education was less than lackluster. Thankfully, a handful of hardworking, passionate teachers instilled in me a love of reading, writing, and learning. It was those few teachers that inspired me to pursue college and it was in college that I thrived.

I have spent the last seven years in higher education, not only learning, but editing articles, holding seminars, teaching classes, giving lectures, and tutoring. I have many passions when it comes to subject matter, from mathematics and science, to theology, philosophy, logic, and Arabic. Rather than working a dead-end job, I'd love to give back by teaching and tutoring, especially those kids who have difficulty reading, writing and learning.

I was a teacher assistant for formal and material logic during the spring of 2016. I also tutored in 2014-2015.

I received a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy from St. John's College.

I have been studying Arabic for three years and tutoring since summer of 2015.

I am currently teaching English writing, literature, and grammar for 4th - 8th graders.

In order to study Ancient Greek, French and Arabic, I was required to study English grammar intensely.

I am available most times of the day to tutor. I love teaching and promise all of the lessons will be beneficial and fun!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I graduated from Zaytuna College where I studied Classical Arabic for 8 semesters. I have also been tutoring Arabic for 3 semesters, focusing on morphology and grammar.

Basketball

I played basketball from elementary school to high school. I played in various leagues throughout my time and still play today.

Classics

I received a minor in Classics from St. John's College.

Logic

I was a teaching assistant for formal and material logic in the spring of 2016 at Zaytuna College. I also tutored for both classes in 2015.

Political Science

I received a B.A. from St. John's College in Annapolis, MD, where I studied the works of Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Roussea, and other major western thinkers on Political philosophy and science. I also received a B.A. from Zaytuna College where I studied classical and modern Islamic political theory.

Public Speaking

I received a B.A. from St. John's College in Annapolis, MD, where I studied the speeches of Lincoln and Douglas among other famous speeches. I also received a B.A. from Zaytuna College where I studied classical rhetoric and gave speeches on multiple occasions. I have also taught classes in which public speaking is required.

Religion

I received a B.A. from St. John's College in Annapolis, MD, where I studied the Old and New Testament, the latter in Greek. I also studied the works of St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Maimonides. I also received a B.A. from Zaytuna College in Islamic Law and Theology.

Study Skills

I received two B.A.'s, wrote two theses, took the LSAT, the GRE, and required to memorize a large amount of information, understand it, apply it, and write about it. I was also a TA for two logic classes and tutored multiple students for Arabic; I would not have been able to do any of this if I did not have study skills. I have also researched study skills, memory techniques, and spend a majority of my time studying.
