About Emma

I tutor mechanical engineering subjects such as statics, strength of materials, structural analysis, and vibrations. I can also help with linear algebra and multivariable calculus, which are needed to understand finite element analysis.

I graduated from MIT with an SB in Civil Engineering, and I am a mechanical EIT with lots of teaching and tutoring experience. I taught linear algebra for MIT's high school summer program; worked as a science instructor at the Newman School in Boston; and have been tutoring college-level mechanics for the last five years. I have particular experience with structural analysis through years of supporting civil engineering majors at Northeastern University.

My hourly rate is $40 if we meet at Lawndale Public Library and $100 otherwise.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I frequently tutor calculus, and I have studied it from many angles. In high school, I scored 5/5 on both AP Calculus AB and BC examinations. At MIT, I aced multivariable calculus. I have also taken mathematical analysis, and it has given me insight into the theoretical development of calculus.

Civil Engineering

I have a SB in Civil Engineering from MIT. I specialize in the structural analysis of trusses, beams, and frames. I am very familiar with conjugate beam theory, the load displacement relationships, flexibility method, stiffness method, moment-distribution method, and energy methods.

Discrete Math

While at MIT, I took several discrete math classes covering number theory, graph theory, combinatorics, and probability.

Classes I have tutored:
MIT 6.042 - Mathematics for Computer Science

Electrical Engineering

I have much experience working with electronics and teaching circuits. I have designed circuits for school projects and for my professional work, built my own loudspeaker crossovers, and upgraded the wiring in my vintage car. I have also taught Maxwell's equations, Kirchoff's laws, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, capacitors, diodes, and ideal op-amps. My approach is hands-on; students are encouraged to use my breadboard, meters, signal generator and parts to build and test their own circuits.

Linear Algebra

I took linear algebra at MIT, and the concepts I learned reappeared ubiquitously throughout my engineering coursework. Because of this, I am very familiar with both the theory and engineering applications. I taught an informal introduction to linear algebra class and also have experience tutoring undergraduate-level linear algebra.

Mechanical Engineering

I am a certified mechanical EIT in MA. The certification process involves passing the FE, an eight hour exam that tests competency in mechanical engineering topics such as statics, dynamics, vibrations, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials.

Physics

I have an SB in Civil Engineering from MIT. I specialize in the structural analysis of trusses, beams, and frames. I am very familiar with conjugate beam theory, the load displacement relationships, flexibility method, stiffness method, moment-distribution method, and energy methods.

Life Saver! — Emma tutored me for Statics and Strength of Materials last semester. She was always well-prepared, and I remember being continually amazed by her knowledge and competence in the material. She knew how to solve all the problems without looking at them twice, and she would always guide me through the solution instead of simply throwing it at me. She was also incredibly patient and took the time to a ...
