I currently work at Success Learning Center/Visalia Music School, as well as with the Kings County of Education as an assistant in an elementary-middle school special ed classroom, and finally as an ESL teacher with a focus on early literacy. I am being trained on the Orton-Gillingham early literacy approach at Success Learning Center. In addition to writing and math groups and private tutoring, I teach voice, guitar, and piano there. Prior to that, I spent seven years working at Molly's Music, and four years working with the Norwalk La Mirada School District as an AVID tutor for all high school levels and subjects.

All that to say, I've been lucky to work with a variety of families, age ranges, abilities, and areas of need/interest. I'm looking to more directly pursue education, and I'm actively working to find the best way to do so. I care about my students' success, and their parents' stress levels with scheduling. I look forward to answering any questions you have.

Last year, I created a math tutoring program at the high school where I tutored prior. This involved getting familiar with the Math 1/2 integrated approach to algebra and geometry, and testing, hiring, and training appropriate tutors for it (along with subbing). I've privately tutored Algebra 1/2 in the past, as well as Math 2 more recently since that curriculum shift. I also took Trigonometry and PreCalculus.

Math didn't click for me until 10th grade. I remember a lot of tears going with times table tests, and thanks to moving mid-introduction to long division, I experienced being at the back table for extra help. I was extremely lacking in confidence in my arithmetic in Algebra, even though I liked the puzzle of it. My parents had me take a CD-Rom math class over the summer, and finally things started clicking - primarily because I realized I was able to do it! I began to look forward to math, instead of dread it. Sometimes all a student needs is a little extra explanation, different perspective, or support and structure.

Voice (Music)

I spent about five of the seven years at Molly's Music as an active teacher, where I grew as an educator and musician thanks to the support and training of other teachers there in classical Bel Canto and contemporary Seth Riggs styles. I also had the opportunity to study voice under Nadia Smelser at Orange Coast College and participate in their choir (in addition to middle school and high school choirs). My teaching included both private and group instruction, where vocal warm-ups included an increasing complexity of ear training, vocal register and range stretching, and general technique challenges. While the focus was on repertoire for performance, I always include elements of musicianship in sight reading and solfege for my singers, as well.
