About Kristin

I have been working as a special ed teacher for the past 12 years. Some of this experience has been in a home-school environment, and some has been in classrooms at various schools. I have worked with youngsters from 3 - 18 years old. I enjoy working one-on-one with my students and I enjoy tutoring in a variety of academic areas. I was a science major in college (Biology/Anthropology), yet chose to become an English teacher. I am strong in both science and English. Because I have always felt called to work with people with special needs, I obtained a Special Education credential and a Master's degree in Special Ed. My strongest areas to teach are: reading skills, writing skills, organizational skills, study skills, social skills and test-taking skills. I can help a student with science and math up through Algebra. I have a great deal of experience working with students who have learning disabilities, ADHD, high-functioning autism, emotional disturbance, or brain injury.

I love working with kids. I especially enjoy tutoring students one-on-one because I feel I can be the most effective in helping each student with his or her special needs. I have two sons of my own and have lived in the Grass Valley area for over 20 years. I do a lot of community volunteer work. You can also hear me on KVMR radio, where I am a broadcaster.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I hold a California-issued credential in Special Education, as well as a master's degree in Special Education. I have worked extensively with students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Students with this diagnosis usually need extra help with Executive Functioning skills. I have taken additional coursework in this area and have varied resources and skills to offer students.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I hold a California-issued credential in Special Education, as well as a master's degree in Special Education. Not only have I worked closely and extensively with students who are on the autism spectrum (such as Aspergers), but I taken additional coursework in ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) and received additional authorization to work as a teacher to students with autism or Aspergers.

Dyslexia

I hold a California-issued credential in Special Education, as well as a master's degree in Special Education. Reading is a complex series of skills. Dyslexia refers to a neurological disruption in one or more aspect of these skills. Reading skills are the most important skills to have in order to function successfully in the public school system. There are many approaches to helping students with dyslexia. I have the experience and educational background to work with students with reading difficulties.

Elementary Math

My expertise is in helping children understand math, and I try my best to make it fun.
I am also trained and experienced in helping children improve their reading skills. My background is in special education, so I have a lot of resources.

English

I have a single subject teaching credential in English. I help students improve their reading and writing skills. Both of these areas involve complex sub-skills. I find each students' areas of strength and help them strengthen the areas that have room for growth.

I also have a special education background. I work well with students who struggle with their academic tasks, whether or not they have an IEP.

Special Needs

I hold a California-issued credential in Special Education, as well as a master's degree in Special Education. I have worked for the past 12 years as a credentialed teacher specifically with students who have special needs. The areas included in special ed are extensive and range from Orthopedically Impaired to Blindness to Deafness to Learning Disabled and more. I specialize in the needs of students who have Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, high-functioning autism (traditionally known as Aspergers), Traumatic Brain Injury , and ADD/ADHD.
