About David

I am currently teaching French at UC Santa Barbara as an MA/PhD student in Comparative Literature (with an emphasis in French). My education has furnished me with a great background in the humanities, and I specialize in tutoring English, French, literature, and writing.

I received my BA in Literature from UC Santa Cruz (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). There, after studying French for two years, and taking a French Literature course, I studied abroad in Bordeaux, France, and received straight A's in all of my courses. I am happy to assist beginning to intermediate students in the French language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

In high school, I received a 5 on the AP English Language test. In college, I majored in Literature at UC Santa Cruz, receiving a 3.9 GPA in my upper-division Literature courses and graduating with honors in the major and my graduating class (cum laude). I have experience helping college students with their writing.

French

As a Literature student at UC Santa Cruz, I took the whole series of French language courses (1-6), and received A's in each course. I then aced a French Literature course before studying abroad for five months in Bordeaux, France, where I also received straight A's. I gained fluency in France, and am now a prospective graduate student in Comparative Literature, with French as one of my principal literatures.

Grammar

I have had to write cogent, well-formulated essays that not only feature strong argumentation and style, but rely on a solid foundation in grammar and punctuation. Grammar errors unfortunately distract readers from content, and hurt one's ability to convey him or herself as eloquently as possible. In my writing tutoring, I have always held a strong emphasis for proper English, and this element forms an essential part of my pedagogy.

Literature

In high school, I received straight A's in two AP Literature courses. My senior year, I took a Shakespeare course at my local California State University. As a Literature major at UC Santa Cruz, I took a wide array of courses and acquired an excellent foundation in many classics of American and World Literature. I excelled as a Literature major, graduating with honors. I am a prospective graduate student in Comparative Literature (English and French).

Proofreading

As a Literature major at U.C. Santa Cruz, I had to become a fastidious self-editor. This crucial skill enabled me to achieve a high level of success and graduate with honors in the major. I also honed my skills through peer-editing. Although I did this in part as a requirement in some lower-division Literature courses, I also did so as a tutor by proofreading the essays of fellow teammates who wanted assistance with their writing.

Soccer

I have played soccer since the age of four. After playing club soccer and high school soccer (three years on Varsity), I played four years at U.C. Santa Cruz as a goalkeeper. I have coached youth players of all skill levels the last two summers, and am especially well-suited to train goalkeepers.

Writing

I have always had a strong knack for writing, a tool which was essential to my success as a high school and college student. As a Literature major, I was constantly reading and writing--so much so, in fact, that my soccer teammates would ask for my help with their essays. This experience gave me informal training in tutoring writing, which I am looking forward to building upon as a professional tutor.
